Cicero is, as we have come to expect from him, primarily the private man, and secondarily the cultivated author (though the introduction to this volume does recount his political career in outline). (?) The editor has an eye for relations with both Quietuses, and we are given examples of cicero?s skill in the consolatory and commendatory genres: his cheerful social life under the dictatorship is strongly evoked, as is, more briefly, his vacillation in early 49 (?) and his grief for Tullia, with the embarrassing question of Public. (?) The book has the great advantage of Shackleton Bailey?s own text (for most of the letters) and a skeleton apparatus or ?textual notes? (ELIZABETH RAWSON in The Classical Review (New Series), 1981, pp.119-120).

The paper covers have some yellowing to the spine and along the outer edges of the front and back covers next to the spine and there is a little scratching to the back cover. Very slight wear to the page edges. The pages are otherwise clean and unmarked. From the collection of Anthony Edwards, Life Fellow of Gonville & Caius College and retired Professor of Biometry at the University of Cambridge. This book was part of his collection of Oxford books which was a reflection of his keen and active interest in the governance of the Collegiate University.
