Before his death, he bid farewill to his parents, siblings, and even "the negroe wench," as well as addressing the neighbors who were there. Mearns delivers lessons to the children and youth of Neshaminy and to their parents about the wisdom of being prepared for death. He also suggests that Matthew was not the first of the Grier children to die, saying to the parents: "God seems to be taking away your Children in Succession."
