Undine, originally written in German in 1811, is the fairy tale of a water nymph who falls in love with Huldbrand, a knight exploring the forest to win the affection of a duke's daughter in town. The story was immensely popular in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with multiple translations and an operatic adaptation performed in 1816. Fouque's story served as inspiration for other notable stories, including Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid. Signed.

Original vellum-bacled parchment boards blocked in gilt, top edge gilt. The binding unfortunately with soiling & dust-marking, surface lifting on upper cover, scuffing to lower, headbands worn. However internally very clean. Worthy of a fine rebind and generously priced to allow for this.

This copy is from the library of Cecil Edward Byas (1865-1938) of Hampstead, England, who collected books and art pieces that have since been donated to various institutions. Professionally repaired as to spine and inside front and back gutters. With 29 Rackham illustrations (including frontispiece) attached to heavy brown construction paper. All illustrations preceded by tissue paper with red text titles. Two of the tissues have small tape repairs. Some age-toning to internal pages, else book is internally clean.
