Diese besagt, dass die Erde des um 1278 gegründeten Stadtfriedhofs aus dem Heiligen Land stammt und die wundertätige Eigenschaft besitzt, Leichen innert w…eniger Tage vollständig zu zersetzen. Mittelalterlichen Quellen zufolge stammt die terra santa, die heilige Erde, aus Jerusalem, nämlich vom Akeldama, dem Blutacker ein Ort, der ungleich weniger bekannt ist. Aber auch hier kursiert seit dem Hochmittelalter dieselbe Glaubensvorstellung einer raschen Zersetzung von Leichen. Zu beiden Aspekten der Pisaner Terra Santa-Legende, dem Ursprungsort der Erde wie der Vorstellung einer raschen Verwesung, liefert Rahel Meier bahnbrechende Resultate. Die Autorin dekonstruiert die traditionelle Annahme zur Lage des Memorialortes in Jerusalem und stellt damit unser Verständnis des Akeldama auf völlig neue Grundlagen. Diese erlauben wiederum eine plausible Hypothese, wie die Vorstellung einer raschen Zersetzung von Leichen entstanden ist. Die Ergebnisse des ersten Teils der Untersuchung ermöglichen daher ein neues und erweitertes Verständnis zum Jerusalemer Fremdenfriedhof und zur Sakraltopographie der Heiligen Stadt. Die genauere Deutung des Camposanto zu Pisa ist nur mithilfe einer vollständigen Untersuchung des Phänomens der mediterranen Verbreitung der «Repliken» oder materiellen Verdinglichungen des Akeldama im Hoch- und Spätmittelalter möglich. Im zweiten Teil wird deshalb die Verbreitung der Legende und die Gründung von heiligen Äckern im späten 13. Jahrhundert untersucht. Rahel Meier macht deutlich, dass die Entstehung der ortsgebundenen Terra-Santa-Legende in Pisa nur wenig früher von einem in der Forschung kaum bekannten heiligen Acker (Campus Sanctus) in St. Jean d'Acre (Akkon) vorweggenommen wurde. Höchstwahrscheinlich machten sich die Pisaner hier in Akkon, mehr als in Jerusalem selbst, mit der Idee einer synekdochisch-analogischen materiellen Heraufbeschwörung einer translatio Hierusalem vertraut. Die Pisaner betreiben einen erheblichen Aufwand, um ihren heiligen Acker (Campus Sanctus) architektonisch und künstlerisch zu inszenieren, ihn im lokalen Kontext zu verankern und symbolisch zu verstärken. Der eigentliche Anziehungspunkt war das aus Jerusalemer Erde bestehende Bestattungsfeld im Zentrum, gleichsam das Herzstück der vorliegenden Untersuchung. Mit dem Camposanto errichteten die Pisaner im Laufe der Jahrhunderte einen gewaltigen Reliquienschrein für die heilige Erde. Die kultische Zentralität des inneren Feldes anerkennend, interpretiert Rahel Meier die Fresken Buonamico Buffalmaccos und stellt die Hypothese auf, dass im Felsen ein Hinweis auf das Purgatorium zu finden ist.
