Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Fine condition blue boards with a white cloth spine and blue and red spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped color photographic dust jacket. Includes Dedication; Foreword; Epilogue; and Ralph Kiner's Major League Record. Illustrated with sections of black-and-white photographs. "Has anything ever happened in baseball that Ralph Kiner wasn't there to witness or doesn't know about?" Marvelling at the wealth of funny, off-beat, baseball-wise stories with which Ralph Kiner fills his Mets broadcasts, Newsday columnist Stan Isaacs asked a question that will be echoed by every reader of Kiner's Korner - certainly one of the most entertaining baseball books ever written. A Hall of Fame player, Ralph Kiner has been a radio and television broadcaster for the New York Mets since the very beginning in 1962, when septuagenarian manager Casey Stengel first confronted his awesomely awful expansion team in spring training and dubbed them the "Amazins." Now, following their spectacular 1986 World Championship, Ralph Kiner tells the behind-the-scenes, season-by-season story of the Amazin' Mets. Here are Dwight Gooden, Keith Hernandez, Gary Carter, and Darryl Strawberry - along with such earlier Met favorites as Stengel, Gil Hodges, Tom Seaver, Yogi Berra, Willie Mays, and Marvelous Marv Throneberry - as only one of the most gifted storytellers in the game could reveal them. In alternating chapters, Ralph Kiner gives us a captivating account of his own life and times. While leading the National League in homers for seven consecutive years, he inspired the famous line "home run hitters drive Cadillacs." Kiner led a full life off the field too, dating Hollywood stars like Elizabeth Taylor and marrying tennis champion Nancy Chaffee, the first of his three wives. A marvelous raconteur who has known all of baseball's greats over the past 40 years, Ralph Kiner's stories about tight-fisted Branch Rickey, teammate Hank Greenberg, and dozens of others help make Kiner's Korner a triple-crown winner of a book. Co-author Joe Gergen is an award-winning sports columnist for Newsday and The Sporting News." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.

This outfielder debuted with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1946-53) and also played for the Chicago Cubs (1953-54) and Cleveland Indians (1955) before starting a successful career as sports broadcaster, first with the Chicago White Sox and elsewhere until 2013. TQS, heavy stock 6" X 4" card, n.p., n.y. Fine. Card prepared by an admirer and boldly signed by Kiner at center in black ballpoint. At top is typed Kiner's sentiment that "I think one of the most difficult things for anyone who has played baseball is to accept the fact that maybe the players today are playing just as well as ever," and at bottom is typed his well-known malaprop: "If Casey Stengel were alive today, he'd be spinning in his grave." A fun piece and, though not dated, likely signed in the 1980s.
