Extensively illustrated in color, the volume surveys tobacco-related material culture includ…ing early American and colonial pipes, meerschaum and briar pipes, Scottish snuff mulls, Chinese snuff bottles, tobacco tins, cigar accessories, advertising art, and trade artifacts. Text by Rapaport; photography and curatorial direction by David R. Wright. This copy is warmly inscribed by Rapaport (May 1997) to Dr. Joseph Lewis Horowitz (d. 2017), longtime Bridgeport, Connecticut obstetrician-gynecologist and recognized authority on figural tobacco jars. Dr. Horowitz practiced medicine for over 35 years and was widely respected within collecting circles for his scholarship and research on figural tobacco jars, in which he became a world expert. The inscription reads in part: 'You may not be a smoker, but you sure are an admirer of the artifacts related to tobacco!' The association is particularly apt, linking one of the leading modern writers on tobaccoiana with a prominent specialist collector in the field. Benjamin Rapaport is a leading modern scholar of tobacco history and collecting, known for his extensive research on pipes, snuff, and smoking-related decorative arts. He has authored numerous works on tobaccoiana and is respected within collector and curatorial communities for documenting the artistic and material culture of tobacco. His publications remain standard references for serious collectors.
