Munich: Maistrassenpresse, 1967. Square octavo (15.5 × 14 cm) Original cardboard wrappers with color linocut print, japanese block binding; [30] pp. with 5 full-page color linocut prints. Wrappers slightly dust-soiled; flyleaf has a tiny private dedication; else very good. One of only 120 numbered copies of the rare psychedelic underground publication; signed by the author and artist to colophon. In the small, independent Munich publishing house, whose books never exceeded a print run of 200 copies, it saw itself as a forum for artistic and literary outsiders, whose publications circulated among Munich's bohemian circles. Here, for example, Herbert Achternbusch published his first texts before going on to become known throughout the German-speaking world as an avant-garde figure of young German literature with his novel "Die Alexanderschlacht", published by Suhrkamp. The graphic artist Klaus Staeck, who had been causing a stir since the 1970s with his posters for the SPD and others, also printed his first graphic works here. The artists and authors handled the design, typesetting, and bookbinding themselves. They often printed on a small knee-lever press that came from an old Munich monastery printing house. One of the printers was Benno Käsmayr, who founded "Maroverlag" in 1969, where Charles Bukowski was first published in German and Jörg Fauser published two novels. Käsmayr transitioned to publishing through his work printing the Beat and cut-up journal "Gasolin 23," and his press became a key hub for contemporary American literature in Germany. The influences of American counterculture are also very evident in the present publication. It is a very early example of psychedelic graphic design in Germany, a style that did not become popular until a few years later. The stark color contrasts, the pop and comic elements combined with organically flowing and curved forms - with their echoes of Oriental ornamentation and floral Art Nouveau patterns - were not yet a feature of German mass printing in the late 1960s; this style was tested here in a small print run with great graphic effort.
