Published by Frederick Muller Ltd in 1942, here is the first hardback printing of Bertram Ratcliffe's Marshal de Grouchy AND THE GUNS OF WATERLOO. Blue cloth binding, 49 pages plus index this rare little book is in fair condition with some general staining to the cloth covered boards the end papers and at instances throughout. There is also the pencil signature of a previous owner to the front free end paper. The very rare dust jacket is fair with some moderate chipping and 3 or 4 closed tears plus some general staining to the insides and outside. A scarce book.

4 volumes. 8.5 x 5.5, cloth with paper label on covers, approx 100pp each + ads, covers worn, soiled and darkened, hinges loose, contents toned. The first four issues of this English literary magazine. Each volume was once owned by Rev Charles C. Bubb, founder of Cleveland's "The Clerk's Press," with his handwritten name, "Fremont, Ohio" and date in each of the volumes. Nice association pieces. Sold as a lot only.

Condition: Very Good. One of six hundred copies, this example inscribed by the translator who was the first British soldier to escape a German POW camp during the First World War and return to Britain. The translator has inscribed the first blank: 'Bertram Ratcliffe Linton Wetherby Yorkshire'. Near fine book, otherwise unmarked, in near very good jacket, a little rubbing at the head and tail of the spine, not price-clipped. Ratcliffe's remarkable war service earned him tea with the king and a Military Cross - his epitaph on his death in 1991 was 'Soldier, Writer, Poet, Lover'. He had been captured early in the war and sent to Ingolstadt in Bavaria after being wounded at the Battle of the Marne. After several attempts his mother managed to smuggle a compass to him in a tin of Harrogate toffee, and when the chance came in 1917 he escaped all the way back to England. Covers and spine well worn, edges and corners creased and worn, some small rips and nicks, top and bottom of spine chipped and worn, surface of spine chipped and worn, cover ripped entire length of join with spine, cover appears to have been reattached, internally in reasonable / good condition, pages crisp and clear but wear to edges and corners, a few creased corners and a few small nicks on edges.
