Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. HOW TO KEEP OUR LIBERTY: A PROGRAM FOR POLITICAL ACTION, Raymond Moley, hardcover with unclipped dust jacket, stated 1st edition, 1952. BOOK CONDITION: very good. The text block is in near fine condition, with no tears, dogears, or marks. Pages are age-to…ned. No bookplate or signature of a prior owner. Not a library book or remainder. The red cloth boards are in very good condition (lightly bumped spine corners). The dust jacket is in fairly good condition (age-toned inside and out, faded backstrip). 8 ½ x 6, 345 pages, 19 ounces XX THERE have been many books describing and attacking the current trend toward socialism in the United States, but this is the first one by a competent authority in politics that tells the citizen exactly what he can do about it. It first outlines the specific public policies that constitute the danger. Then it presents an alternative series of policies — a people's platform. Beyond that, its most notable part is a specific set of directions for political action by citizen groups, including methods of organization and the techniques of appealing to voters through personal contact, speeches, and political literature. The author has drawn upon forty years of experience in observing, teaching, writing, and practicing politics. As is well known, he created and headed the famous Brains Trust of Roosevelt's first campaign for the Presidency and later was a major architect of the early and more conservative New Deal. His opposition to later developments in national policy has culminated in this highly original and exciting political tract. It is written with a lucidity and skill well known to the author's millions of magazine and newspaper readers. XX RAYMOND MOLEY is Contributing Editor of Newsweek magazine, the author of a widely syndicated newspaper column, and Professor of Public Law at Columbia University. He has made the study of politics his life work. He has been a university professor for more than thirty years and an established and widely read journalist for twenty. In 1931 and 1932 he was chosen by Franklin D. Roosevelt to direct the formulation of policies for his drive for the Presidential nomination and for his successful campaign in 1932. Later he assisted the new President for three years in the preparation of his important state papers. In the famous Hundred Days session of Congress in 1933 he had a major part in the formulation and management of legislation. His story of the Roosevelt days appeared in 1939 as a book called After Seven Years. This book recorded Mr. Moley's conviction that the sound principles of the early Roosevelt period had been perverted into a dangerous drift toward centralized Federal power and paternalism. A more recent book, 27 Masters of Politics, offers lively profiles of many of his notable political contemporaries. XX Some significant excerpts from the book: The people of this nation are today presented with a choice between two forms of political and economic life. One is that of our traditions, in which individual liberty prevails and is guarded by the long, still grasp of law. The other is the dominance of the state in human affairs. Above all, this book considers what I have called the middle interests of America. These interests are vital to a free society.

John Lincoln was an electrical engineer, a contemporary of Edison, Brush, and Coffin, who established the Lincoln Electric Company in 1895. Through his life he recorded 54 patents and devised a mechanism which helped win WWII. He also acquired real estate holdings and Bagdad copper properties. But his main accomplishments were in social and economic change in the cause of justice and enlightenment among people. This is an account of what one man with such natural endowments could accomplish in America. A clean very presentable copy in a Brodart mylar jacket.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. THE FIRST NEW DEAL, Raymond Moley, with the assistance of Elliot A. Rosen, foreword by Frank Freidel, hardcover with unclipped dust jacket, stated first edition, 1966. BOOK CONDITION: good. The text block is in very good condition, with no tears, dog ears, or…marks. There are three cracks but no detachment from spine nor any loose pages. Not a library book or a remainder. The blue cloth boards are in good condition (bumped corners and spine, some faded or worn areas along edges). The dust jacket is in fair condition (some tears along edges and folds, discolored spine). 9 ½ x 6 ¼, 577 pages, 38 ounces XX [From the dust jacket] In 1932 Raymond Moley assembled and directed the famous Brains Trust that supplied Franklin D. Roosevelt with the policies and speeches that assured his first election as President. Following the election, Mr. Moley continued as the new President's closest adviser and assistant, and helped initiate reforms that have influenced national policy ever since. THE FIRST NEW DEAL was nine years in the making. In it Mr. Moley re-creates the events and decisions of that crucial year 1932 from the vantage of a prime participant and witness. He tells, too, of the post-election contacts between Roosevelt and Herbert Hoover, the recruiting of the new Cabinet, the process that lay behind the writing of Roosevelt's first inaugural address, the rescue of the nation's banks, the planning and execution of the work of the Hundred Days' Congress, the history of the failure of the London Economic Conference, and the events that led up to Roosevelt's victory in 1936. Mr. Moley's vital story is enriched not only by his reflections on what happened in 1933 and thereafter, but also by a series of sixteen remarkable portraits of crucial figures in the first New Deal, among them Louis Howe, Jesse Jones, Gen. Hugh S. Johnson, Felix Frankfurter, and Joseph P. Kennedy. XX Raymond Moley, born in Berea, Ohio, in 1886, has had many careers. He is the author of, among other books, After Seven Years, 27 Masters of Politics, and The Republican Opportunity. Long chairman of the Department of Government at Barnard College, he also served Columbia University as Professor of Public Law. He has been associated with Newsweek since it began and is now Contributing Editor. Elliot A. Rosen is Associate Professor of History at Rutgers.
