Add to basketFirst edition of this illustrated lexicon of Romanian athletes, intended to aid selection for the 1936 Olympic Games. It includes a description of sports played in Romania, as well as 1,564 alphabetical descriptions of athletes, each presented in the three main languages of the country: Romanian, Hungarian, and German. The album emphasizes the considerable involvement of Jewish athletes in Romanian sport during the 1930s, before the Holocaust. Clubs such as Hakoah in Arad, Makabi in Bukarest, and Barkochba in Szatmar offered football, boxing, tennis, gymnastics, table tennis, and dance, among other disciplines. The album additionally includes entries for famous Romanian athletes such as Rudolf (Ruda) Wetzer, the first professional Romanian footballer, and Stefan Auer, who won the 1929 Mitropa Cup playing for Hungary. Szigethy (Elizabeta) Böske of Ineu, the only female footballer in Romania, is also featured. A member of the Victoria club in Ineu for 12 years, she had played centre forward in an otherwise all male team for eight years at the time of publication, and the Esti Kurir newspaper reported enthusiastically on her play in June 1931. WorldCat locates one copy, held at the Biblioteca Centrala Universitaria Lucian, Romania. Two more are recorded, also in Romanian institutions: the Alexander D. Xenopol Library in Arad and the Minerva Cultural Association in Cluj-Napoca. Other copies likely exist, but variable cataloguing of its trilingual contents prevents further certainty. Octavo. Half-tone photographic illustrations in text. Original red cloth, dark red cloth label to spine lettered in white, front cover lettered in black and white, with illustration of a shot putter. Ownership annotation partly erased on front free endpaper. Recased, extremities lightly worn, binding marked and with a few small damp stains, contents lightly browned, foxing to endpapers and occasional spotting to lower margins. A very good copy.
