Guter Zustand. - Undergroundfilme sind Kurzfilme oder Spielfilme, deren Entstehung und Rezeption im Wesentlichen unter Ausschluss einer breiten Öffentlichkeit stattfinden. Als Spielart des Independent-Films arbe…iten die Filmemacher unabhängig von Filmstudios, Kinoverleihern oder Fernsehsendern und können ihre künstlerische Vision ohne Einflussnahme verwirklichen. Da den Produktionen oft nur geringe finanzielle Mittel zur Verfügung stehen, handelt es sich dabei meistens um No-Budget-Filme. In Szenekreisen finden Undergroundfilme gelegentlich eine Anhängerschaft und werden so zu Kultfilmen. Geschichte: Ein Film wie Un chien andalou (Ein andalusischer Hund, 1929) von Luis Buñuel und Salvador Dalí sollte eine Provokation darstellen wie ein Undergroundfilm, wurde aber im regulären Kinobetrieb gezeigt und gerade deshalb zum Skandal. Der Ausdruck underground film tauchte zuerst 1957 in dem Essay Underground Films des US-amerikanischen Filmkritikers Manny Farber auf. Farber benutzte ihn, um sich damit auf Regisseure zu beziehen, die Antikunst in Hollywood gemacht hatten. Er kontrastierte Soldaten-Gangster-Cowboy-Regisseure wie Raoul Walsh, Howard Hawks, William Wellman, und andere mit den weniger begabten Regisseuren De Sicas und Fred Zinnemann, die immer noch die Filmkritiker faszinieren. In den späten 1950er Jahren sprach man von Undergroundfilm in Bezug auf eine kleine Anzahl unabhängiger Filmemacher, die es zuerst in San Francisco, und New York City und bald darauf auch in anderen Städten gab. Bekannte Vertreter in den USA waren Stan Brakhage, Bruce Conner, Piero Heliczer, Ken Jacobs, Jonas Mekas, Ron Rice, Barbara Rubin, Jack Smith, George Kuchar und Andy Warhol. In Europa entstand vor allem im österreichischen Film mit Künstlern wie Kurt Kren, Otto Muehl oder Otmar Bauer ein wahrer Underground. In Frankreich wird beispielsweise Jean Genets bereits 1950 entstandener Film Un chant d'amour (Ein Liebeslied) als ein Vorläufer des Underground gesehen. In Deutschland sind Birgit Hein und Wilhelm Hein Pioniere des Undergroundfilms gewesen. In den späten 1960er Jahren war die Bewegung gereift und einige Protagonisten begannen sich von den gegenkulturellen und psychedelischen Konnotationen zu distanzieren und bevorzugten Ausdrücke wie Avantgarde oder Experimentalfilm. Auch in Deutschland wurden ab den späten 1960er Jahren vermehrt Undergroundfilme gedreht. Bekannte deutsche Filmemacher wie Rosa von Praunheim, Werner Schroeter und Herbert Achternbusch begannen ihre Karrieren mit Undergroundfilmen. In den 1970er und 1980er Jahren sprach man jedoch immer noch vom underground film um den gegenkulturellen Pol des unabhängigen Kinos zu bezeichnen. Besonders Nick Zedd und andere Filmemacher des New Yorker Cinema of Transgression und No Wave Cinema von den späten 1970er bis zu den frühen 1990er Jahren beriefen sich auf den Undergroundfilm. In den frühen 1990er Jahren wurde das Erbe des frühen Cinema of Transgression in den USA von einer neuen Generation von Filmemachern aufgegriffen, die Undergroundfilm mit transgressiver Kunst und No-Budget-Filmen verbanden, Filmen, die sich den stärker kommerzialisierten Versionen des unabhängigen Films, den neureiche Verleiher wie Miramax Films und New Line Cinema vertrieben, wie auch dem institutionalisierten Experimentalfilm, den die großen Museen kanonisiert hatten, widersetzten. Dieser Geist definierte die frühen Jahre von Underground-Filmfestivals wie dem New York Underground Film Festival, Chicago Underground Film Festival, Torontos Images Festival, und anderen, Zines wie Film Threat, und die Arbeit von Filmemachern wie Craig Baldwin, Jon Moritsugu, Carlos Atanes, Sarah Jacobson und Bruce LaBruce. Seit den späten 1990er Jahren ist der Ausdruck wieder unscharf geworden, da sich die Untergrundfestivals jetzt stärker mit dem etablierteren Experimentalfilm mischen.
