Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 400 pages. Published in 1993. Retrospective collection of essays on subject. One of the absolute best books on the art and achievement of film-making of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. Presents Terrence Rafferty's "The Thing Happens: Ten Years of Writing About The Movies". His first, and thus far, only collection of indispensable film criticism. Brilliantly conceived and eloquently written, with probing insight, encyclopedic knowledge, and exacting (yet always fair) judgment. The title comes from James Agee, the pioneering film critic, who compared and contrasted (as he often did) the difference between "laborious" writing, which is descriptive at best, and a film's "immediate" impact, that is, the visceral sensation one experiences while watching - and then "reliving" - a film: The thing happens, "before our eyes", as Stanley Kauffmann once observed, and made the title of HIS own greatest book of film criticism. Incidentally, this central insight about the film medium derives originally, and famously, from Walter Benjamin. Rafferty's sumptuous, 400-page book is served in three courses, beginning with a great Essay on Jean Renoir, surely THE filmmaker of life's sensuous, creative, and intellectual appetites, followed by a (much more measured) section on "Directors", and concludes with scintillating "Movies", piquant reviews of films from the last quarter of the 20th century, Renoir's "successors" when they are at their best. Rafferty is a "hedonist/humanist" of a critic, who loves life, and has little patience for narrowly "aesthete", nihilistic film directors like Peter Greenaway, whom he feels obligated to write about in order to demolish the self-referring, closed-circuit film-making Greenaway epitomizes. "Agee, Farber, and Kael are his peers" (Guillermo Cabrera Infante). An absolute "must-have" title for Terrence Rafferty collectors. What a find: This was the personal copy of Clay Felker, the late great magazine and literary editor of several major American magazines, notably Esquire, which he helped make more literate and literary. As was his custom, he signed his name in black ink-pen on the inside front cover, discreetly hidden from view by the front DJ flap. This title is a great collection. This is the only such signed association copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Terrence Rafferty did NOT tour to promote his book. Copies available online have very serious flaws (because they were avidly read) or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. One of the most brilliant film critics of the 20th century and our time. Some of the greatest film artists of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO STANLEY KAUFFMANN AND PAULINE KAEL TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0802114857. Signed by Author.

Catalog of the exhibition that took place at The Art Institute of Chicago from February 3 - April 1, 1973. Warmly SIGNED and INSCRIBED by JEAN RENOIR (the GREAT FRENCH FILM DIRECTOR and SON of the Painter PIERRE-AUGUSTE RENOIR) on the half title page: "For Lilian / affectionately / Jean Renoir / Sept 7, 1973". ("Lilian" is Lilian Kaufman, wife of the noted pianist Harry Kaufman who was a student of Josef Hofmann and who headed the piano department at the Curtis Institute of Music for 17 years. Harry and Lilian Kaufman were friends with many noted musicians, artists and writers. See more at the end of this listing.) Published by the Art Institute of Chicago, 1973. First Edition. Softcovers, 8x10 inches, 214 pages. VERY GOOD condition, tight, bright and clean. RARE with the AFFECTIONATE INSCRIPTION and SIGNATURE of the GREAT FILMMAKER JEAN RENOIR. About JEAN RENOIR (from Wikipedia): ******Jean Renoir (15 September 1894 - 12 February 1979) was a French film director, screenwriter, actor, producer and author. As a film director and actor, he made more than forty films from the silent era to the end of the 1960s. His films GRAND ILLUSION (1937) and THE RULES OF THE GAME (1939) are often cited by critics as among the greatest films ever made. As an author, he wrote the definitive biography of his father, the painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Renoir, My Father (1962). Jean Renoir was ranked by the BFI's Sight & Sound poll of critics as the fourth greatest director of all time.****** About HARRY KAUFMAN and his wife LILIAN KAUFMAN (from the UCLA Library Special Collections and other Internet sites): ******UCLA SPECIAL COLLECTIONS - HARRY KAUFMAN PAPERS 1900-1961. Harry Kaufman (born 1894 New York City, died 1961) was a PIANIST and MUSIC TEACHER at the CURTIS INSTITUTE OF MUSIC, Philadelphia. For 17 years he headed the Department of Accompanying. During this time his former piano teacher JOSEF HOFMANN was director of the Institute. Harry Kaufman was also a very successful piano soloist, performing with orchestras in the U.S. and Europe. He accompanied such artists as Joseph Szigeti, Toscha Seidel, Nathan Milstein, George London, William Primrose, and many others. He usually traveled with his wife, LILIAN. The Harry Kaufman collection consists of correspondence between HARRY KAUFMAN, his wife LILIAN KAUFMAN, and people in the worlds of classical music, literature, painting, and various other arts. Correspondents include: Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein, Van Wyck Brooks, Dorothy Chandler, Pierre Fournier, George and Ira Gershwin, Josef Hofmann, Sol Hurok, Joseph Levine, Henry Miller, Eugene Ormandy, JEAN RENOIR, Arthur Rodzinski, Arthur Rubenstein, Elizabeth Schuman, Gertrude Stein, William Steinberg, Leopold Stokowski, Igor Stravinsky, Joseph Szigeti, Henri Temianka, Virgil Thomson, Lilly Toch, Louis Untermyer, Alfred Wallenstein, Meredith Willson, Efrem Zimbalist, and others. Most of the correspondence is addressed either to HARRY and LILIAN KAUFMAN or simply to LILIAN KAUFMAN. It appears that Lilian was the avid letter writer of the Kaufmans, and through her correspondence developed lasting friendships with many noted musicians and artists. This collection belongs to the UCLA Library, Department of Special Collections.******. Inscribed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Very good+ condition. First Edition. 217 pages of text followed by [iv] pages, and containing 217 black & white plates. Full green Morocco leather binding by Giulio Giannini of Firenze with an inlaid red leather spine label; protected in custom-fitted archival mylar. There is minor shelfwear, including a number of tiny scuffs. Number 3 of a limited edition of 45 copies, signed by Lionello Venturi, with an original etching by Renoir tipped-in. The etching, which is unsigned, is titled "Baigneuse debout, a mi-jambes" and was printed in 1910 or shortly thereafter. It is in excellent condition, as one might expect being protected inside a book. There is only the first state of this etching (Delteil 23). There are at least three distinct impression categories depending upon when and the order in which they were printed. This impression is an early one, but not among the earliest, with a very good plate tone and maintaining very good detail in the dark areas. Later impressions lose detail and allow much more ink on the paper. The limitation page reads "Tiratura limitata a 45 esemplari numerati oltre a cinque fuori commercio. Copia No 3. L'incisione allegata a ogni copia e originale di Auguste Renoir." Previous owner's gift inscription on the front endpaper, that of Boston teacher and poet Antonio Alfredo Giarroputo. The text is clean and unmarked. First edition. Size: Octavo (8vo). Signed by Author(s). Book.
