This work by Dr Marcell Restle of the University provides a thorough overview of the surviving medieval frescoes in Asia Minor. Cataloguing paintings from seventy-eight different churches, this work records the surviving frescoes from outside Constantinople. The thorough analysis and collection of images allowed Dr Restle to establish a chronological classification for the frescoes, which in turn allowed for a new understanding of the relationship between Byzantine art and Western medieval art. Volume I is primarily text, with some photographs, illustrations, and ground plans. Included in the text are stylistic studies, a catalogue of churches and their paintings, and a history of Asia Minor and its art. Volumes II and III contain the plates, including more than 2500 new photographs. Each fresco is shown in its entirety, followed by close-ups and more specific details.
