Born in Massachusetts and educated at Amherst College and New York s Auburn Theological Seminary. Soon after his ordination in 1830, he sailed to do missionary work in the Sandwich Islands (now known as the Hawaiian Islands). He returned to the United States in 1840 and spent the next 4 years in Madison, Ohio. His time in Appalachia came at the end of his life; he served as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Westfield, New York from 1845 until his death in 1854.
