Crowe's poem 'Lewesdon Hill' had appeared in 1788. "How little is Crowe known, even to persons who are fond of poetry! Yet his Lewesdon Hill is full of noble passages", in the words of his friend Samuel Rogers. Original drab boards with printed paper label to spine, top edge rough, others untrimmed. Chip to edge of label, several letters hard to discern. Early ink ownership name (J. Parkinson?) to front free endpaper. Dent to lower board at fore-edge, trace of wear to head of spine. An unsophisticated copy, in very good condition.

Shows the boards and edges shelf rubbed with surface losses, former owner names of the period at the front endpaper, otherwise the binding is secure and tight, the text is completely unmarked, and the boards remain distinct. Pages in very good clean condition. No inscriptions except pencilled bookseller note on endpapers. Poetry to page 91 Followed by a section of Notes continuing the pagination to 115. 6 1/2" Tall, 190g. Front board detached but present. Front free endpaper missing. Antique inscription "Frederick Choppin from his friend Nathaniel Dodson", on half-title page. No other inscriptions. Only a very occasional small spot of foxing, otherwise pages in very good, clean condition. Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.

Loss to hinges and slight splitting to head and tail, some wear to corners and extremities, boards lightly stained, some foxing to leaves. Ink ownership inscription to front and an elegant handwritten full-page gift inscription to ffep in ink: 'As a testimony of Regard to Instruction, this book is presented to Miss Jemima Craze as a reward for Writing and Ciphering with the hope of encouraging Future Endeavours, by J: D, Haddon' (there's a pencil date of 1821).
