Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. I am pleased to offer a vintage book titled: "The Cause and Cure of Infidelity: Including a Notice of the Author's Unbelief and the Means of his Rescue" by Rev. David Nelson. This book is bound in blind-stamped tan paper boards with gilt titles on the spine. The only illustration is that of a tissue-guarded engraved portrait of the Author. The book was published by the American Tract Society of New York, dated 1841 and the Second Stereotype Edition, corrected by the Author. Please see the photos of the Table of Contents for your further information. And by the way, this book is about "infidelity" to Christianity or to the church, not as I thought, about infidelity in a marriage. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The blind-stamped boards are bumped, to the board and lightly soiled and the gilt titles on the spine are hard to read. I would say that the boards are also dust-dulled. Inside, the book is unmarked although the right-hand page of the front endpaper has been torn out (which probably included some markings about past owners). The book is also both soiled and foxed throughout but nothing so severe with either type that the legibility of the text is affected. The front hinge is cracked but the rear is intact and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.…

The cloth cover is faded and has some fraying at the edges, with noticeable wear on the spine. Hard. The Cause and Cure of Infidelity: Including A Notice of the Author's Unbelief and Means of His Rescue was written by David Nelson (September 24, 1793 - October 17, 1844) was an American Presbyterian minister, physician, and antislavery activist who founded Marion College and served as its first president. Marion College, a Protestant manual labor college, was the first institution of higher learning chartered in the state of Missouri. Born in Tennessee, Dr. Nelson had once been a slaveholder but became an "incandescent" abolitionist after hearing a speech by Theodore D. Weld. Unpopular with proslavery groups in northeastern Missouri, Nelson stepped down as president of Marion College in 1835. In 1836, Nelson fled Missouri for Quincy, Illinois, after slaveowner Dr. John Bosely was stabbed at one of his sermons. Nelson then remained in Quincy, where he founded the Mission Institute to educate young missionaries. Openly abolitionist, two Mission Institute sites became well known stations on the Underground Railroad, helping African Americans escape to Canada to be free from slavery.Nelson was the author of The Cause and Cure of Infidelity, which includes an account of his conversion to Christianity. He also wrote the lyrics to "The Shining Shore," a popular hymn by composer George Frederick Root. Nelson is said to have written the poem while he was a fugitive in Marion County, Missouri, looking across the Mississippi River toward Quincy, Illinois. This edition bound in black blind stamped cloth with gold spine lettering & decorations. 12mo size, 352 pp. A good copy although extensive spotting and foxing. Binding rubbed at the spine tips and scratch on the back boards. as well as slight bumping of the corners else tight and clean. Food Books.…
