Noticeable thumb marking, foxing and tanning to pages. Much more prominent to text block edges, pastedowns and free endpapers. Moderate cracking and staining to gutters causing some looseness to binding but pages remain attached. Boards have minor corner bumping and edgewear with mild staining, tanning and scuffing overall. Spine has heavier tanning with soft splitting, fraying and crushing to ends. Book has a slight forward lean.

Cloth. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. This novel contains 582 pages with one illustration, the frontispiece by C. A. Grant. The condition is very good. The pages are clean and free of writing and tears. There is a signature on the fly leaf and it is brown with age. The binding is very tight. The dark green cloth cover is stamped in gold with three white lines in a rectangle around the front and shows little wear. The back of the cover is soiled in a few places. The top of the pages is gilt.

The novel centres on Walter Gregory, a young man emotionally exhausted by disappointment, illness, and spiritual drift. Retreating from urban life to a quieter rural setting, he encounters the Walton family, particularly Miss Walton, whose practical kindness and moral steadiness gradually "open" his hardened, defensive nature. Ornate cover, wear to cover, pages slightly tanned. Inscription to front end page, signature, libris page, minor foxing evident.

His works were popular with middle class readers in England and America. Many were translated into European languages. They had a strong moral and religious theme. Hardcover with turquoise cloth boards has black designs imbossed on front & spine, gold shadow boxes on spine, red shadow box on front, but no dust jacket. Striking design looks to me to be part of a set rather than a stand-alone title. Wear and color fade along edges, but edges are well defined and not worn through. Pages are browning with age, but not brittle. Gift inscription in front papers does not add value. Interior is tight, clean and otherwise unmarked. Always privately owned. Copyright 1880. Printing & edition not explicitly stated. Front cover doesn't have title but states "The Novels of E. P. Roe" This indicates this copy is from a set of such and not likely a stand alone 1st edition. No ISBN, LCCN, nor MSR. Inscribed No Value.

Condition: Good. Scarce. Boards with some scuffs and marks. Clean is mostly clean with a mild even tone - some white spotting marks to the dulled gilt page ends. Prize sticker to ffep and a tape repair to the title page. Crack to front hinge but binding overall is pretty stable.
