Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Caregiver, educator, trustee of institutional traditions, public religious voice and, occasionally, prophet: in an increasingly multifaith, multicultural, global world, the role of the college or university chaplain has changed. This book examines experiences and perspectives that arise at the intersection of religious practice, distinct campus culture, student counselling and the secular context of the modern academic institution. Contributors who are actively engaged in the work of college chaplaincy-from educational institutions as diverse as Stanford University, Williams College, Jesuit-affiliated Creighton University and Louisiana's historically black Dillard University, and from many faith traditions-explore the practice, theology and joys of campus ministry and the chaplain's calling to support, challenge, stir the imagination of and address this generation's urgent longing for connection and meaning. Contributors who are actively engaged in the work of college chaplaincy explore the many aspects of campus ministry: navigating the secular academy as religious professionals, supporting students' increasingly hyphenated religious identities and more. One oblong folio linen-backed chart filled with assorted ancient, and pre-modern alphabets, all arranged in juxtaposition with each other, sized 38.5 x 20.5 when folded out, preserving original brown boards mounted on verso when folded, and green cloth slipcase (fore-edges split, wear, rubbing, couple minor closed tears to the chart at fold creases), still G copy. First edition of this splendid lithographic chart which compared 45 different ancient alphabets, and was companion to the author's "One Primeval Language Traced Experimentally" 1851-1854. Marbled endpapers. Armorial bookplate on front pastedown. Interior is clean with some occasional light foxing. pp. [2], (3)-271. The matter includes her arguments against the free-thinkers, who here husband also attacked, and references Shaftesbury, Hume, Voltaire, Bolingbroke, and Rousseau. In addition to addressing various theological and philosophical matters, Anne largely waxes upon the importance of Christian education and morality. According to the Berkeley scholar Stefan Gordon Storrie, Anne's correspondence here started around 1764, when Anne was approaching her sixties and Adam Gorden was still a young man. Volume I is divided into two parts: [a] the Preface by the editor, Rev. Adam Gordon, Rector of Hinxworth, which is dated December 18, 1790; and [b] 31 of the 41 letters by Anne Berkeley. [For reference, Volume II, which is not offered, included [a] the final ten letters by Anne, [b] the ''Anniversary Addresses from a father to his son, on his birthday,'' by Adam Gordon, and [c] ''Six letters to a Lady of Quality,'' by the historian and Christian mystic, Nathaniel Hooke.].

Original blind-stamped blue/green cloth. 2 folding maps ("The Scriptural Geography of Arabia" and "The Classical Geography of Arabia"), one vignette plate with view of Akab al Hajar, folding broadside and one plate of inscriptions. Bindings lightly worn and soiled, spines faded from blue to green, contents clean, generally a very good set. First and only edition. "An attempt at the proof of the descent of the Arabs from Ishmael" (Ghani), based on the analysis of the pre-Islamic inscriptions uncovered in the Hadhramaut. Includes an interesting attack on Edward Gibbon's 'geographical' explanation for the rise of Islam out of Mecca; Forster denounces Gibbon's "scepticism" and "artful insinuations" by pointing out some of his errors in historical geography, meanwhile defending the claim of a Scriptural prophecy in favour of the descendants of Ishmael. Forster (1787-1871) was a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, and a protege of Bishop John Jebb (1775-1833); although he did not live to know it, he was also grandfather to the novelist E.M. Forster. After assisting Jebb as curate and later as chaplain, Forster became rector of Sisted in Essex and one of the Six Preachers in Canterbury Cathedral. His first book, the controversially conciliatory Mahometasim Unveiled, appeared in 1829.

With Illustrative Plates, A Harmonized Table of Alphabets, Glossaries, and Translations." lllustrated throughout in offset exquisite lithographs of artwork in text, on plates and multiple fold-outs. Forster, one of the six preachers of the Cathedral of Canterbury, and rector of Stisted, Essex, expounds on the interrelatedness of knowledge transmitted through a common ancient Egyptian language source. He believes that ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics and the Semitic alphabet have pictographic commonality that was then passed to Christianity. It compares the alphabets of Hebrew from Ethiopia, Arabic, Rosetta Enchorial Alphabet, the Etruscan Alphabet, and 39 other from around the world, even South America.
