Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 1811-1823. Four titles bound together. First: The History of Buxton: and visitor's guide to the curiosities of The Peak. 1811. 222pp plus notes, index and errata. With eight plates. Second: The History of Chesterfield, and its Charities, &c. 1823. viii, 132, [11]pp. With frontispiece… and three other plates. Third: Copy of the Statutes of Tideswell Grammar School. 1817. 16pp. Fourth: A Geological Account of A Descent into Eldon Hole, &c. 1813. 38pp. With frontispiece. Bound together in light tan quarter leather, papered boards, spine ruled with gilt titles. Square and firm. Sporadic marginal annotations by a former owner, with several additional printed ephemeral items and notes tipped in. Contents in good order. A 'Very Good' copy. Derbyshire historical and topographical interest. The Eldon Hole caving account is particularly rare, and helped debunk centuries of local myths about the chasm being a "bottomless pit" leading straight to Hell. Earlier writers including Hobbes and Defoe had claimed the chasm had no measurable floor. One copy in the BCL. An interesting Derbyshire/Peak District related collection.
