A three volume history of science from ancient times up to 1837. An amazing achievement by Whewell and landmark in the history of science. Whewell knew Faraday and Herschel as working scientists, but knew nothing of Charles Darwin. The first volume contains the index to all three volumes, making pages referring to say, Galileo, Cuvier, Buffon, Lyell, Herschel, Laplace, Kepler, etc. easy to find. In three volumes in full leather, with marbled inner cover pages. A little foxing on the first and last pages of each volume, otherwise pages are bright and the binding is tight and hinges are all good.

One of a series of eight works on the power, wisdom and goodness of God as manifested in the creation, known as the 'Bridgewater Treatises'. They were written at the request of the trustees of Francis Henry Egerton, eighth and final Earl of Bridgewater [1756-1829], in accordance with the provisions of his will.

First edition. Three volumes. 8vo. Twentieth century tan quarter sheep over russet cloth boards, gilt ruled compartments to the spines, gilt lettered direct to two panels and dated at the feet, blind tooled device to the others. Very good. Whewell was a prolific writer and something of a scientific polymath, concerning himself with the development and understanding of the wider reaches of the subject rather than specialising in specific branches. Indeed, it was said that Charles Lyell initially regretted that his contemporary didn't concentrate his great intellect on particular sciences, but subsequently came to the opinion that "by being a universalist rather than a specialist he was assisting the progress of science".
