This is the atlas volume of plates showing the process of iron metallurgy in France. A text volume (370 pages) was also issued, not available here. This volume is bound without any cover-title, nor a title-page. / "The Catalan forge, or forges with Catalan, is a set of technological processes intended to obtain iron, by direct reduction of the ore â" without going through the intermediary of the cast iron as in a blast furnace . . . The Catalan forge uses a hydraulic force to operate, on the one hand, a hammer or swift, and on the other hand a ventilation system, the trunk, intended to maintain the combustion of the fireplace. The term refers to both technology in itself and the building where this activity is carried out. Contrary to what its name may suggest, this type of forge was used everywhere from the 17th to the 19th century in mountain areas, Alps, Massif Central and Pyrenees, but also by the first American settlers." PROVENANCE [2]: Charles Edward Smith, was president of Reading Railroad, Philadelphia, his gift to the Franklin Institute Library â" Franklin Institute Library. See: E. Add to basketIn this letter Tower describes his personal experience of the winning of the North Sea trophy by C. L. Salaman's 35-ton yacht Dianthus. 4pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged paper chipped at head. Folded for postage. Addressed to 'My dear Dick' and signed 'Beauchamp Tower'. A long letter with 105 lines of text. He begins by congratulating Harington 'on getting an Indian judge ship which will enable you to marry, though I and all your other friends will be very sorry to lose you'. Writing from on board the winning yacht 'Dianthus', he describes how the contest for the North Sea Trophy began at Dover, with the 'Dianthus' racing 'the Inyone and Wave Queen'. In the nighttime fog the 'Dianthus' encounters '[a] steamer which we supposed to be the Ostend boat', which 'only just stopped her engines in time to avoid running us down. The next day the fog cleared and we were abreast of the North Hinder at noon distant about 5 miles. (We had to leave all the light ships on the Dutch and German coasts on the starboard hand)'. He continues his account of the contest, with reference to 'the Haaks light ship' and those of 'Terschelling' and 'Borthum'. Eventually 'we sighted Heligoland right ahead. Inyone crossed the line at 9.32 pm and we crossed it at 9.51 but as Inyone had to allow us 4 hours we were the winner by 3 hours 21 minutes. The winning line was a search light ray thrown from a man of war and when our sails were illuminated by the ray they fired a gun and we knew it was over. The Emperor's yacht "Haarzollern" was there as well as the man of war "Mars". They told us if we waited 2 hours a tug would tow us to the Elbe but we remained hove to in a heavy sea, till 4 am and no tug coming we sailed to the Elbe, a torpedo boat towed us up the last reach to the canal entrance and nearly pulled us under water.' Eventually they are 'presented to the Emperor who gave us the cup and talked to us about our voyage'. After 'a big dinner' with 'sweet Champagne' they sail from Kiel, arriving at Copenhagen, from where they will shortly sail to Gothenburg.

Add to basket19pp, foolscap 8vo. On five bifoliums. Neatly and closely written. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Tower's letter begins: 'My dear Dick | I enclose a chart [not present] which will show you at a glance my yachting cruises during the past season'. The rest of letter consists of extracts from Tower's diary, 4 April to 12 September 1901, describing with the care one would expect from an engineer, 'one of the best long vacation cruises on record', and ending with a table of 'Distances sailed by me in Gwnfa', from Brightlingsea to Harwich, Antwerp, 'Abortive attempt from Flushing', Flushing, Dover, Portsmouth, Dieppe, Maestrand, Copenhagen, Kiel, Brunsbutell, Hamburg, Cuxhaven, Lowestoft', totalling 2135 miles. Tower adds this to the total steamed in another ship ('Ingani'?), 'making a grand total for the seaon of 1901 of 3508 miles'. In businesslike fashion Tower notes times, position, weather, and significant incidents. A representative entry reads: 'Tues 13th. Very fine weather Lat 54.40 N Long 6.22 E by obs. At noon | Wind dropped at 4.pm. We were amongst a fleet of German steam trawlers. Sent a boat to one of them and got a bucket full of fine Plaice | becalmed all night'. See Tower's obituary in Minutes of the Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers, vol.162 (1905) pt 4, which describes his connection with the sea, his 'principal work' being 'the gyroscopic "steady platform" for guns and searchlights [] The device was submitted to the Admiralty, and after being thoroughly tested, was fitted to two gunboats, on which it answered very well; but ultimately the Admiralty rejected the apparatus on account of the extra weight involved [] Mr. Tower nevertheless proceeded to adapt the platform for passenger-seats on cross-channel steamers'. The recipient Sir Richard Harington, 12th Baronet (1861-1931) would not succeed to the baronetcy until the death of his father in 1911. Himself a keen yachtsman, he was a Puisne Judge in the High Court of Justice at Fort William in Bengal between 1899 and 1913. From the Harington family papers.

This report is a comparison of merits of Crystal Springs town site and Aurora town site (located in Southern Nevada, adjoining the Nevada Atomic Test Site) to serve the people employed at Mercury Test Site and Test Site Area #3. The plan consists of construction of a lake, newly created community, encompassing complete services for residential and commercial, recreational, hospital, schools, electricity, water, gas, sewer systems to serve the needs of the people employed at Mercury Test Site and Test Site Area #3. The report concludes that "It is obvious that Crystal Springs Town Site, being approximately one-half the distance between Mercury and Test Site Area #3, will better serve the employees rather than the Aurora Town Site. Among the factors considered were location, water analysis, recreation, irrigation, Soil's report, time element, financing, and comparison of merits. Information in this document indicates it was prepared circa 1962. Crystal Springs is a ghost town in the Pahranagat Valley region of Lincoln County, Nevada in the United States. The ghost town is located at the junction of State Route 318 and State Route 375 (Extraterrestrial Highway), just northwest of U.S. Route 93. It is a popular destination for passersby who want to visit the towns of Hiko and Rachel. The namesake of the ghost town, the Crystal Springs, lies nearby; it is a large group of marshes and springs along the White River. Crystal Springs provides irrigation for multiple nearby ranches and farms, some of which lie over 5 miles away from the springs. The ghost town is marked as Nevada Historical Marker 205 (Crystal Springs). It is located not far from the Nevada Test Site. Aurora is a ghost town in Mineral County in the west central part of the US state of Nevada, approximately 22 miles southwest of the town of Hawthorne, three miles from the California border. The town was dominated by a harsh climate with violent and unpredictable weather, which made a permanent settlement increasingly difficult without outside support. There were a few attempts to revive the city, but those were not successful with the last attempt ending in 1918. Presumed First Edition, First printing of a limited number of copies.

Minor inking to upper margin not affecting map, generally an excellent example. Lagoon Heights was located between Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs. According to text in the lower left of print the promoters of Lagoon Heights were J. & W.R. Wing of New Bedford, Mass. outfitters of the whaling trade, Charles F. Allen of Worcester, Mass. and Barling & Davis of New York. By the 1870s a thriving commercial town in Oak Bluffs began to develop in the area where Methodists and Baptists had gathered for summer meetings beginning several decades earlier. Lagoon Heights, an elevated area on the west side of the headland, facing a sheltered lagoon and with sweeping views Vineyard Sound, was part of the transformation of the area to a more secular vacation grounds. However, despite the careful planning of the development as evidenced by this work, it was derailed by the Panic of 1873, the year the map was published, that ushered in a long depression.
