The magazine had 14 issues and was published from January 1968 to July 1971. From January, 1968, through July, 1971, Ginzburg published Avant Garde. While it could not be termed obscene, it was filled with creative imagery often caustically critical of American society and government, sexual themes, and (for the time) crude language.Avant Garde had a modest circulation but was extremely popular in certain circles, including New York's advertising and editorial art directors. Herbert F. Lubalin (1918-1981), a post-modern design guru, was Ginzburg's collaborator on his four best-known magazines, including Avant Garde, which gave birth to a well-known typeface of the same name. It was originally intended primarily for use in logos: the first version consisted solely of 26 capital letters. It was inspired by Ginzburg and his wife, designed by Lubalin, and realized by Lubalin's assistants and Tom Carnese, one of Lubalin's partners. It is characterized by geometrically perfect round strokes; short, straight lines; and an extremely large number of kerned ligatures. The International Typeface Corporation (ITC) (of which Lubalin was a founder) released a full version in 1970."--wikipedia ; G. Book.

4to. [214 pp (unpaginated).], printed in red & black in portions, with text illustrations and photo-illustrated throughout. Gray-blue publisher's cloth, yellow & blue lettering on front cover, 40th Infantry Division sunburst badge on front cover (minor rubbing, edgewear, slightly shaken), still VG copy from library of Keith Albert Zilk (1927-2020), Korean War Vet, Company D, 40th Infantry, and photographer with Condit Photo Studio, and later with Jantzen Swimwear. First edition of this very uncommon and well-illustrated unit history of the 40th Infantry Division, from their call-up in California, and shipped-out to Japan for training in March, 1921. The 40th Division was moved into Korea in January, 1952, and relieved the 24th Infantry Division on the Battle Line, including the 160th, 223rd, and 224th Infantry Regiments, where they participated in the battles of Sandbag Castle and Heartbreak Ridge. They suffered 1180 casualties, 311 killed in action, and eventually 1457 wounded. The Division deployed in various areas, and was still entrenched in the Heartbreak Ridge/Sandbag Castle Sector until July 1953, continuing to come under fire until the armistice. The hundreds of photographs visually capture the lives, activities, and deprivations of the 40th Division, and were shot by Ralph Hall, Kenneth Roberts, William Wilde, Alan Barton, Nathan Buchman, and many others.
