Unter Verwendung von größtenteils unveröffentlichtem Bildmaterial, auch aus ausländischen Quellen, wird in eindringlicherweise der Kampf der Luftwaffe an allen Fronten dargestellt. Zahllose Bilder von allen Einsatzbereichen und viele Detailfotos zeichnen einen Querschnitt von den Begebenheiten, mit denen die deutschen Militärpiloten konfrontiert wurden. Die Bilder zeigen Stuka, Bomber und Jäger im Anflug, im Gefecht und nach ihren Missionen, Piloten, Bordschützen und Fallschirmspringer im Einsatz, Bodenpersonal bei der Wartung und Kommandeure bei der Lagebesprechung - und auch das traurige Resultat: Zerstörungen und Trümmerfelder. Das Buch gliedert sich nach Jahren und Kriegsschauplätzen.
