The original plates are tissue-guarded. ABOUT THE WORK The Decameron, subtitled Prince Galehaut (is a collection of short stories by the 14th-century Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375). It is sometimes nicknamed l'Umana commedia (The Human Comedy), as it was Boccaccio that dubbed Dante Alighieri's Comedy 'Divine'. The book is structured as a frame story containing 100 tales told by a group of seven young women and three young men; they shelter in a secluded villa just outside Florence in order to escape the Black Death, which was afflicting the city. The epidemic is likely what Boccaccio used for the basis of the book which was thought to be written between 1348 and 1353. The various tales of love in The Decameron range from the erotic to the tragic. Tales of wit, practical jokes, and life lessons also contribute to the mosaic. In addition to its literary value and widespread influence (for example on Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales), it provides a document of life at the time. Written in the vernacular of the Florentine language, it is considered a masterpiece of early Italian prose. Boccaccio was one of the most important figures in the European literary panorama of the fourteenth century. Some scholars (including Vittore Branca) define him as the greatest European prose writer of his time, a versatile writer who amalgamated different literary trends and genres, making them converge in original works, thanks to a creative activity exercised under the banner of experimentalism. ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR Louis Chalon (1862 -1915) was a French painter, illustrator, goldsmith and silversmith and sculptor. Chalon studied with Jules-Joseph Lefebvre and Boulanger. He showed his classically inspired paintings at the salons of the Société des Artistes Français in Paris from 1880 to 1911, where he received numerous awards. CONDITION REPORT VG+ Binding and exterior: Firm hinges and joints, tight pages. Spines sunned to brown. Top edge gilt a bit dusty. Light rubbing to extremities and boards. Colorful, supple leather. Gilt work in excellent shape. A handsome set with great shelf appeal. Interiors: Generally clean, lightly toned pages with slight darkening along top margin edge. Mostly light to sporadic foxing, heaviest along plate margins, tissue guards and near plates. Latter half of Volume II foxing a bit heavier. Several leaves uncut by the printer. Light signs of handling like a few smudges. All in all, a lovely collectible extra-illustrated limited-edition set of the Decameron in gorgeous fine morocco. Louis Chalon (illustrator).
