Seller: Amnesty Bookshop - Brighton, Brighton, United Kingdom
Hardcover. Condition: Poor. This book combines two separate sets of sermons by Robert Sanderson. The listed date comes from the title page for the SECOND set of sermons. (NB. At the end of the Preface of the book's first section there is a date of July 13, 1658. For context: this is 3 years later than the comparable date in the Preface of the second batch of sermons). It is important, however, because the title page for the first set of sermons appears to be missing. Please also note that the front board has separated from the bookblock. It is for this reason that the book is assessed as being in a poor condition. Fair/Good (for its age) is generally applicable to most of the book s contents, structure and appearance. Half-leather boards are fairly scuffed in places. The spine is generally very chipped and frayed. Internally, most of the pages are mildly tanned at the edges with the text remaining clean and crisp. In the latter part of the second section a small triangular area of darker tanning appears on some of the pages near the top edge/gutter (image). Contents pages (both sections): someone has added, (in what is now brown coloured ink) page numbers for each sermon; as well as correcting an omission - see below. This is barely noticeable (and useful!). There is also some vertical pencil paragraph marking - mainly in the second section. Section one: pp. 314 + Table of the Places of Scripture, section two: pp. 313 + pp. 12 (the additional sermon) + Table of the Places of Scripture. 8vo (imperial octavo, +/-). Both sections have prefaces (first: 33 pages, second, 10 pages - unpaginated but later page numbering in ink (brown). The first preface includes an indication that this collection of sermons is a reprint, the second likewise outlines one of the reasons for publication: an illicit copy of Sanderson s sermons had been discovered on the Isle of Wight. Both sets of sermons conclude with a detailed list of Scriptural references (image). Section One has 14 sermons. Section Two has 21 according to its contents list. In fact, there is an extra sermon (Ad Clerum) not referenced in the relevant Contents pages. Please do not hesitate to ask any further questions and note that, depending on destination, we may request an additional payment to cover any extra shipping/postage charges. Abe2309.
