The Ansgar biography written by the archbishop Rimbertus (d. 888) was unknown until the middle of the 17th century when the German scholar Petrus Lambek found it in a manuscript in the monastery of Saint Germain des Près in Paris. Lambek had the biography published in 1652, together with a poem about Ansgar, written by a monk in the Corbeia monastery. Two decades later Elias Brenner travelled in Finland and returned to Uppsala with the so-called "Nådendals klosterbok". It contained, among other things, a comprehensive medieval manuscript in Swedish - an Ansgar biography of unknown origin. The historian Claudius Arrhenius read the text, borrowed Lambek's work from his colleague Schefferus in Uppsala, and soon decided that the newly discovered manuscript was a Swedish translation of the Latin text found by Lambek. In his edition Arrhenius has included the biographical texts from Lambek's edition and also the foreword and commentaries of the latter. The old Swedish translation is printed in parallel with the Latin text. Two later texts on Ansgar are also included in this edition, "Nicolaus Hermannis Ansgarius-officium" from "Codex Laurentii Oddonis" and a part of "Officia propria sanctorum patronorum regni Sveciæ", published by order of King Sigismund. Claudius Arrhenius (1627-95) was raised to the nobility as Örnhielm in 1684. The nice gilt decor on spine and label is probably made at the bookbinder's shop of Gustav Hedberg in Stockholm.
