It is the first novel in which he perfected the "ingredients" of his later work, skillfully mixing a plot full of adventure and twists that hold the reader's interest with passages of technical, geographic, and historical description. The book gives readers a glimpse of the exploration of Africa, which was still not completely known to Europeans of the time, with explorers travelling all over the continent in search of its secrets.

Ink names to endpapers, contents generally clean. Binding shows some general handling, rubbing etc., inside paper joints cracked. A used yet serviceable copy. A routine trans-Atlantic crossing turns into a fight for survival on a raft in the open ocean as Murphy's Law takes over. First published in 1875. This edition also includes the short story 'Martin Paz' (1852), telling a Romeo and Juliet style romance set in Lima, Peru. Provenance; H.A.V.
