Le premier volume (deux tomes dans l'édition originale), de Robert-Dumesnil entend faire suite à Bartsch et couvre le XVIIe siècle. Les volumes 2 à 5 de Baudicour (qui reprennent les huit premiers tomes de l'édition originale) couvrent le XVIIIe siècle ; les deux derniers volumes (les trois derniers tomes de l'édition originale) reprennent les notes et les projets de Dumesnil pour son Peintre-graveur que sa mort en 1864 laissa inachevé. Brunet (IV, 1327) reprochait à cet "ouvrage d'une grande exactitude" de décrire aussi des oeuvres mineures.…
