The Historical and Descriptive Account of the Caricatures of James Gillray, often considered the 'Father of the Political Cartoon', written by prolific antiquarian Thomas Wright and bookseller Robert Harding Evans. Published by Henry G. Bohn in 1851.In half morocco, half marble boards.Perhaps the most significant political cartoonist in history, Gillray flourished during the latter half of George III's reign, and many of his artworks remain in the National Portrait Gallery. In this particular book, Wright and Evans delve into each of Gillray's entertaining political cartoons and informs the reader the background to each one. Very few in the public light escaped Gillray's satire, with him caricaturing William Pitt, Napoleon, Edmund Burke, the Prince of Wales (George IV) and George III among many others. In half morocco, half marble boards. Externally, smart, with slight rubbing to joints and to morocco extremities. Signs of fading to marble boards and the odd small scratch. Slight fading to spine label. End papers are bright and clean. Front free end paper is nearly loose. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with slight faint spotting to title leaf extremities. Very Good. book.
