On one level, this 103-year-old book is attractive and unusual: Black boards, nicely executed gilt lettering and gilt pages on a volume that has 2,247 pages and is three inches thick. On another level, it seems awfully awkward if this was designed in any way for use in the field by a mechanical engineer. It's nothing that can be tucked into a jacket pocket. But if it's purely a text, I guess the design isn't that critical. Cover is neither a traditional hardcover nor a soft cover. Very thin but rigid textured boards that are black with gilt on the front and the spine and edges of the pages. Name and address of a previous owner in ink on front free endpaper. Long wear mark -- maybe from opening and closing -- on the spine. Couple of handwritten notes in pencil before the title page. But I did not notice any other markings, highlighting, etc.
