This book presents a series of cases in which the application of findings from the author's research on stertor brought about improvement or recovery of patients in a range of dire conditions, including apoplexy, drowning, chloroform poisoning, convulsions, and epilepsy. Prior to the author's developments in the field, stertorous breathingâ"characterized by harsh, noisy soundsâ"in an apoplectic state was not understood and therefore could not be addressed, resulting in a gravely negative prognosis. The author builds a picture of apoplexy and similar conditions, where stertor occurs, as having two meanings: noise expressing interference, and interference expressing an accidental accompaniment of unconsciousness. Demonstrating the causal relationship between the two through meticulous dissections and experiments on animals, the book asserts that removal of the obstruction causing stertor entirely changes the symptoms and management of an attack, with many cases showing remarkable improvement from simply relieving this breathing impediment. This book is a seminal work in understanding and managing a range of life-threatening conditions, offering a new approach to diminishing their symptoms and improving the patient's chances of recovery.
