Soft cover. Condition: Fair. In this philosophical meditation, sociologist and political theorist R. M. MacIver examines time as both a measurable feature of the universe and a central element of human experience. He considers the perception, use, measurement, passage, and apparent illusion of time, connecting abstract questions about temporality with aging, memory, history, identity, and the limits of individual life. Originally published by Trident Press in December 1962, this is the first Giant Cardinal paperback edition issued by Pocket Books in 1963. It forms part of The Credo Series, planned and edited by Ruth Nanda Anshen, in which prominent scientists, philosophers, theologians, and political thinkers presented personal accounts of the ideas shaping their lives and work. Bibliographic sources confirm that the Pocket Books paperback followed the 1962 hardcover edition. Condition: Fair. Illustrated wrappers are heavily worn, with rubbing, scratching, creasing, edge wear, and chipping. A large triangular portion is missing from the upper-right corner of the front cover, with additional smaller losses along the upper edge. Spine is rubbed and creased, with wear at the extremities and some exposed or frayed binding material. Rear cover has rubbing, small stains, and corner wear. Pages are substantially age-toned, with scattered dampstaining and tide marks visible on the preliminary and title pages and along some margins. No ownership inscriptions or annotations are visible in the photographed pages. Binding remains usable, but this is best described as a complete reading copy rather than a collectible-condition example. Robert Morrison MacIver was an influential twentieth-century sociologist and political theorist whose writings addressed society, government, community, freedom, and social change. This late-career work offers a more personal and philosophical side of his thinking and may appeal to readers interested in sociology, aging, temporality, existential philosophy, or the intellectual history of the 1960s. The book will be carefully wrapped and shipped in protective packaging. Orders are normally shipped promptly, and returns are accepted in accordance with AbeBooks' return policies. SCI 2a.
