Add to basketHardback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 1825. First edition. iv, 320pp. This book was published anonymously, but the author is known to be Robert Mudie (1777-1842). Mudie was a British newspaper editor, journalist, and author. He wrote books on a wide range of subjects including mathematics and astronomy, English history, geography and life. He launched two short-lived periodicals, The Independent (April-September 1816) and The Caledonian (June-October 1821), and, after the failure of these he moved to London, where he was a reporter on the Morning Chronicle. He reported on George IV's visit to Edinburgh, and in this book he describes Edinburgh and the King's visit, and his personal experiences of all he saw and his impressions of the City and its residents. The book is bound in contemporary or slightly later full leather boards with gold titling on a leather label and five raised bands on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some light scuffing and marking to the leather on the boards. The spine is darkened and very small pieces of the leather are missing from the top and bottom front corners of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with an armorial bookplate on the front fixed endpaper.

The Botanic Annual; or, Familiar Illustrations of the Structure, Habits, Economy, Geography, Classification and Principal Uses of Plants, with Notices of the Way in which they are Affected in Climate and Seasons; and A Short Sketch of Coniferae, by Robert Mudie. Published in 1832 by James Cochrane and Co., Waterloo Place, Pall Mall. Printed by J. Westley and Co. A very interesting general work on botany, with chapters covering the anatomies, life cycles and classification of plants to list a few topics, as well a general appreciation of botany and its study. The author writes in awareness that he is not so learned on the subject as some academic or professional contemporaries, which has led him to produce this interesting popular botany book. This edition is 3/4-bound in green leather, with brown marbling everywhere else on the boards, being in very good condition with almost no signs of general wear. This is a rebinding- it has been done incredibly professionally and has resulted in this being a very beautiful edition. The spine has hardly faded and the gilt lettering and 4 raised gilt bands with decoration are bright and in excellent condition, making it a very pleasing book to look at. Structurally it is very good, tight and neat, with gilt page edges. Inside, the endpapers are in very good condition. The title page has browned slightly and has some minor foxing and marks but is in good condition. All other pages and text are in very good condition.Between pages 276 and 277 there is a loose tissue paper guard by an illustration. It is unclear whether this was previously attached, as no other illustrations have this protective paper. Overall a very interesting work, beautifully and professionally rebound to a very high standard. Seller Inventory #002645.
