In fair condition, lightly aged, with closed tear along one of the two folds and slight creasing at foot, with a panel lacking from the second leaf. The recipient Johann Martin Muller published a few piece of music in Edinburgh in the 1840s. Thomson b…egins in the hope that if Muller is 'disengaged next Saturday evening' he will join Thomson 'at Seven o' clock sending Beethoven's Sonatas, & Trios; in which case I would beg of you to take the trouble to send the accompanying Note to our friend M Boisragon, as I do not know where his lodgings are.' He asks to be informed on the matter, and in a postscript writes: 'Please to put into my Note to Mr B the hour at which you can come 7 I hope.' Laid down on the second leaf is a newspaper cutting regarding the 'Death of George Thomson, the Correspondent of Burns'. The 'M Boisragon' of the letter is the singer Conrad Boisragon of Cheltenham, who according to one source 'became known as Conrado Borrani on the London opera scene of the 1840s'.

Der als Band 7 numerierte Registerband (Barth 10282) dient den 6 Bänden 1?5.2 von Müller und Glutz-Blotzheim; die Reihe wird dann fortgeführt mit den Bandnummern 6 ff. (in erster [deutscher] Ausgabe). - Die weitere Bearbeitung durch Charles Monnard (dt. 1847-1853), umfassend die Bände 11-15 (Barth 2111) dieser Edition beschreibt die Ereignisse der Zeit 'während des 18. und der ersten Decennien des 19. Jahrhunderts' - Diese Reihe ist eine Schweizergeschichte von den Anfängen ('Des Landes Urgestalt; erste Einwohner; Interesse seiner Geschichte') bis in das 17./18. Jahrhundert (Bauernkrieg; Nimweger Frieden [Nijmegen]; Spanischer Erbfolgekrieg; Toggenburger Krieg) und, im zusätzlichen Band 12.2, der nachfolgenden Epoche vom 18. zum 19. Jahrhundert: 'Geistiges und industrielles Leben; Fremde Kriegsdienste', sowie historische und politische Ereignisse von ca. 1747 bis zu den Unruhen und beginnenden revolutionären Umtrieben im Vor- und Umfeld der Französischen Revolution (bis ca. 1796). -- Der Stellenwert des ganzen Werkes liegt, vielleicht abgesehen von Müllers Behandlung des Mittelalters, aus heutiger Sicht wohl mehr in der wissenschafts- oder geistesgeschichtlichen als effektiv fachhistorischen Bedeutung, was sowohl in den spezifischen Zeitumständen als auch in Müllers persönlichen Voraussetzungen begründet liegt : "Ein Volksbuch konnte seine Geschichte nicht werden. Jedoch den gebildeten Kreisen des In- und Auslandes gab er ein Neues: die Schweiz als Nation. Er hat zudem das erste durchgebildete Geschichtswerk in deutscher Sprache geschaffen. Sein Stil ist veraltet, nur Liebhabern geniessbar. Die Forschung ist über ihn hinweggegangen; der Mythos unserer Vergangenheit, den er zwar nicht ersonnen, aber doch gross und herrlich umgeschaffen hat, ist den Akten gewichen. Aber von Müllers Werk hat die volkstümliche Geschichtsschreibung der Schweiz im 19. Jahrhundert, über alle konfessionellen und parteipolitischen Schranken hinweg, ihren Ausgang genommen. Er erweist sich immer noch als lebenskräftig und wirkungsmächtig. Seine Schweizerhistorie ist selber Geschichte, Schicksal geworden." (Feller/Bonjour, 2. Aufl. 1979, p. 567 ff.) - "Als Universalhistoriker wirkte Müller wenig auf die Nachwelt; seine farbige Schilderung der mittelalterlichen Geschichte der Eidgenossenschaft (5 Teile, 1786-1808) und sein Festhalten an der Befreiungstradition beeinflussten dagegen die historische Forschung im 19. Jahrhundert und die populäre Wahrnehmung der Schweizer Geschichte stark. [.] Als Intellektueller, Kosmopolit und sprachmächtiger 'homme de lettres' faszinierte er Historiker, Literaturwissenschaftler und Künstler des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts." (HLS). - Die Fortsetzer dieser Schweizergeschichte, allesamt ein bis fast zwei Generationen jünger als Johannes von Müller (Schaffhausen 1752-1809 Kassel), sind als eigenständige Autoren zu betrachten, fassten sie doch aus eigenem Antrieb, dem Geist Müllers zugetan, ihre Aufgabe an und nicht etwa als Bearbeiter hinterlassener Schriften. Eine ausführliche Würdigung von Müller bis Monnard geben Feller/Bonjour (pp. 578-599) : "Es brauchte siebzig Jahre, bis die erste moderne Schweizergeschichte vorlag. Müller gab den ersten Band 1780 heraus, Monnard schloss 1851 [seinen französischen Originaltext] ab. In dieser Zeit blieben sich die Vaterlandsliebe und die Methode gleich. Die Methode ging darauf aus, den Stoff aus den ersten Quellen zu sammeln, mit Seelenkunde und Sittlichkeit auszutiefen und in einer Darstellung von geschmackvoller und gepflegter Form aufquellen zu lassen. Nach Temperament, Schärfe, Kritik und Gesichtspunkten unterschieden sich die Verfasser; über allen lag der Hauch einer grossen klassischen Überlieferung. Die Methoden aber, die eine stärkere Ausbeutung des Stoffes erlaubten, mussten erst noch vom Ausland übernommen werden. Der Berufshistoriker war im Werden." (p. 599; vgl. R. Feller, Die Schweiz.
