Cette revue phare de la propagation de la psychanalyse en France après la guerre, fut longtemps dominée par le courant adlérien, mais restait toujours, sous la vigilance de Maryse Choisy, oecuménique, ouverte à tous les courants, même ceux proche de Jacques Lacan. La revue était surtout animée par René Laforgue, Charles Baudouin, Angélo Hesnard, Benjamin Logre, Edouard Toulouse. Elle recevait quelquefois des contributions de grandes figures de la neuropsychiatrie de l'époque, Pierre Janet, N. Perroti. Son intérêt aujourd'hui est d'avoir inauguré une psychopathologie de tous les domaines de la culture, en invitant des spécialistes du théâtre médiéval comme Gustave Cohen, de la propagande politique et du maniement des foules comme Serge Tchakhotine, des anthropologues comme Paul Rivet - il était alors directeur du Musée d'anthropologie du Trocadéro -, des historiens de la philosophie comme Henri Gouhier.
