Das Buch ist dabei inhaltlich als Reise durch die arktischen Jahreszeiten angelegt, wobei mit kleinen Kartenausschnitten jeweils der Standort der Fotografien ausgewiesen ist. Basierend auf seinem Vortrag Die Bäreninsel und Jan Mayen", erzählt Rolf Stange in Wort und Bild von seinen Reisen und Erlebnissen auf der Bäreninsel und Jan Mayen, vor allem aber zeigt er mit vielen oft ganzseitigen Fotos die faszinierenden Landschaften dieser beiden abgelegenen Arktis-Inseln. Der Autor nimmt uns von den wilden Küsten mit bis auf die höchsten Erhebungen - bis auf den 2277 Meter hohen Beerenberg auf Jan Mayen, der einzigen Vulkaninsel nördlich des Polarkreises. Der Autor ist Geograph. Er hat sich Spitzbergen seit 1997 zur zweiten Heimat gemacht und kennt die gesamte Inselgruppe, darunter auch die Bäreninsel, wie nur wenige. Auch Jan Mayen hat er mehrfach nicht nur kurz besucht, sondern dort Wochen verbracht.
