First Edition
First edition in English. Moscow journalist, Michael Romm's account of the first successful Soviet mountaineering expedition to the peak of (then) Mt. Stalin in the Pamir Mountains. Translated from the Russian by Alec Brown. After the Stalin era, the mountain was renamed Garmo. This copy owned by California climber and antiquarian bookseller, Glen Dawson (1912-2016). Dawson made several first ascents in the Seirra Nevadas, including his 1931 climb of Mount Whitney's East Face. He served as director of the Sierra Club from 1937-1951. Dawson is of course remembered in antiquarian book circles as the long time proprietor of Dawson's Book Shop in Los Angeles, which was founded in 1905 by his father, Ernest. An excellent provenance on a title which is scarce in jacket. 8vo, 270pp. 2 frontispieces, photos throughout, folding map at rear. Illustrated bookplate of Glen Dawson attached to front pastedown. Publisher's blue and white cloth boards in illustrated jacket. Chipping at spine ends, edge wear and a few light stains and smudges. A very good example of the scarce jacket.

A patch of fading at the base of the spine otherwise a lovely, bright and clean VG++ copy. The map at the back of the book is present. In the very rare D/W priced 7/6 net to the inside flap (as called for). The D/W has a touch of wear at the head of the spine (not affecting any lettering) and a shallow chip at the base of the spine removing 2.8 cm (at its widest point). The D/W also has several, unobtrusive pink stains. An account of the Russian scientific expedition of 1933 which was the first to ascend this 7,495m summit, the highest in the former USSR and now the highest in Tajikistan. The mountain was originally called Garmo Peak, became Mount Stalin in about 1932, Peak Communism in about 1962 and is now called Ismoili Somoni. Hard to find and very desirable, especially in its original D/W. [Neate R 66].

Original light blue cloth; pp. xii, 269; illustrations from photographs, one folding map; offsetting from endpapers, name on front fly-leaf, otherwise a very good copy.First edition. Mount Stalin (later Pik Communism, now Mount Garmo), the 24,600 foot peak in the Western Pamirs, Tajikistan, was discovered in 1913 by Diemler and Rickmers. 20 years later, a Russian scientific expedition to the area made the first successful ascent on Sept. 3 1933. There was for long much confusion about the heights and identities of these remote Tajik peaks. In 1962 Wilfrid Noyce and the young Scottish climber Robin Smith died in a fall after an ascent of the peak.Neate R66; Yakushi (3rd ed.) R323.
