Original wraps. Condition: Very Good. First Edition, First Printing. 6 1/4 X 8 3/8 Inches. [13 PP]. Original tie-binding with accompanying bibliographic letter and mailing envelope. One of only about fifty copies of this early work by John Meem and Yvor Winters. This copy signed by Janet Lewis to her and husband's (Yvor Winters) bibliographer, Charles Gullans. Accompanying letter (dated 1996) gives a detailed account of the provenance of this piece as well as an overview of the relationship between Winters, Meem, Glenway Westcott and Monroe Wheeler among others. Book and original cover envelope sent to Gullans in 1973. Letter dated 1996 from a previous sale by a rare book dealer SIGNED, "FOR CHARLES FROM JANET - IN FRIENDSHIP - YOU CAN KEEP THIS ONE - / 1/3/73" Early Chicago friends Yvor Winters, John Gaw Meem, Monroe Wheeler, and Glenway Wescott form an unexpected constellation of American cultural influence-Winters, the stern poet-critic whose exacting standards shaped generations of writers; Meem, the architect who reimagined the Southwest through his lyrical Pueblo Revival designs; Wheeler, the quietly commanding curator who helped define modern taste at MoMA; and Wescott, the novelist whose elegant, emotionally charged prose captured the subtleties of human longing. Though their fields differed, all four shared a devotion to craft, clarity, and a belief that art-whether in words, buildings, exhibitions, or stories-could refine the way people see the world. Signed.
