The "Cyclopedia of everything pertaining to the care of the honey bee." first appeared in 1877 and there may have been three revised editions before this greatly revised and enlarged new edition appeared in 1913, bringing the number of copies up to 146,000. As well as the "care of the honey bee" the volume includes information, in alphabetical order, on hives, honey, implements, honey plants and used information provided by many expert bee-keepers. I A Root was responsible for the first edition and in the 1913 version his eldest son E R provides two third of the information. However a small and relatively local honeybee operation in 1930s-1940s rural Copiah County could have easily escaped government business/tax registration or agricultural inspection/certification. Depression-era agriculture product labels for central Mississippi - an area characterized by modest family farms and not the multi-thousand acre plantations of the state's Mississippi River region - are quite uncommon and are an interesting niche within the field of collectible advertising. …
