It was composed of French and American vessels of many types, which operated in the Bay of Biscay and west about halfway to the Azores. The vessels were occupied in patrolling for submarines, sweeping for mines, and defending shipping and troop transports against attack. The American force operated in the Brittany Patrol for a year and a half, and this account is confined to that period. It also deals mostly with the activities of the American force, although the French and Americans worked with the closest co~operation ashore and afloat, and the French play an important part in any account of the Brittany Patrol. Coastal convoys of cargo carriers were under direction of the French, who supplied the majority of the escort groups for their protection. On the other hand, American troopships were under the full direction and responsibility of the American force, which supplied all escorts. The submarine war was a war against ships and shipping, and the Brittany Patrol worked out a system which successfully defended the vessels entrusted to its care. Before the system was perfected twenty~four vessels Were sunk in the Bay of Biscay in the one month.
