Servivano a soddisfare la grande richiesta di materia prima che veniva dalla metropoli lagunare e dalle altre città della terraferma, nel periodo considerato una delle zone più popolate d'Europa. Il Quaderno racconta gli sviluppi storici di questo "fiume di legno" attraverso sondaggi su di un'area specifica, quella attraversata dall'asse fluviale e torrentizio Cismon-Brenta.
