'Scilla' verscheen in 1709 en werd dat jaar ook voor het eerst op het toneel gebracht, hoewel de eerste schouwburgdruk pas in 1731 verscheen. Het spel is daarna in de loop van de achttiende eeuw nog vele malen opgevoerd; in 1751 werd het voor de vijfde maal herdrukt. Rotgans behoorde begin achttiende eeuw met een andere Huydecoper, Balthazar, tot de vernieuwers van het treurspel in Frans-classicistische trant. Vóór Scilla, dat een episode uit de 'Metamorphosen' van Ovidius tot onderwerp heeft, had hij een ander treurspel geschreven, 'Eneas en Turnus' (1705), waarvan de stof ontleend was aan Vergilius' heldendicht, de 'Aeneis'.

Daaronder bevinden zich twee hofdichten: een Gezang op Goudestein, de prachtige buitenplaats aan de Vecht van de familie Huydecoper die grensde aan het Kromwijk van Rotgans, en Stichts landtgezang op Heemstede, het buiten dat toebehoorde aan Diderik van Velthuizen. Voorts tal van gelegenheidsgedichten, de twee treurspelen 'Scilla' en 'Eneas en Turnus', en natuurlijk de beroemde 'Boerekermis' met de twee prenten. Het verzamelwerk, dat is opgedragen aan Joan baron van Welderen, opent met 45 fraai geïllustreerde Zedelessen uit de oude verdichtzelen getrokken, mythologische verhalen naar Ovidius, waar Rotgans steeds een moraal aan vastknoopte. Ze zouden afzonderlijk uitgegeven zijn als de dichter niet onverwacht in 1710 aan de pokken was overleden. Verscheidene zedelessen eindigen met een aantal cursief gezette verzen. Dat zijn toevoegingen van uitgever-boekverkoper en drukker Halma die de gapende ruimten op veel pagina's geen gezicht vond en daarom zelf maar voor opvulling zorgde. Halma, die zelf ook (stichtelijke) gedichten schreef, werkte aanvankelijk in Utrecht, verplaatste zijn bedrijf in 1699 naar Amsterdam en vandaar in 1710 naar Leeuwarden, waar hij als landschapsdrukker van Friesland werd aangesteld. Op veel exemplaren van de 'Poëzy' is op de titelpagina onder Gedrukt by François Halma [.] en over het jaartal 1715 heen een strookje geplakt met de gedrukte tekst En werden uytgegeven by Johannes Oosterwyk, Boekverkoper op den Dam, te Amsterdam, 1715. Ook de talrijke navolgingen wijzen op een grote populariteit. Al in het jaar van verschijning werd de 'Boerekermis' met de grootste greetigheit en blakinge, in geen klein getal, begeert en verkocht, schrijft Rotgans' uitgever en vriend François Halma in het voorberecht bij de 'Poëzy' (1715). Volgens Strengholt bestaan er van de eerste uitgave uit 1708 twee drukken: in een niet als zodanig aangemerkte tweede druk is een aantal slordigheden weggewerkt. Buitendien is er in de oudste druk een ?Zinhinderende Drukfeil? - in regel 1204, waar boerekleren stond in plaats van boerekroezen - op de laatste bladzij verbeterd. In de tweede editie is die drukfout gecorrigeerd. Het hier aangeboden exemplaar behoort tot de oudste druk. De in zijn tijd hooggeprezen en veelgelezen Rotgans (Amsterdam 1653 - Breukelen 1710) leidde een ambteloos leven op zijn buitenplaats Kromwijk aan de Vecht bij Breukelen. Behalve dit uitstapje in het boertige genre heeft hij slechts serieuze poëzie geschreven in de daarbij horende parnas-taal, waaronder een echt epos over stadhouder-koning Willem III.

Rotgans bezingt de daden van koning-stadhouder Willem III, die in 1672 de ondergang van de Republiek voorkwam, in Engeland de katholieke Jacobus II van de troon stootte (Glorious Revolution) en de leiding had van een coalitie tegen de oorlogszuchtige Lodewijk XIV. De eerste vier boeken verschenen in 1698, de volgende vier eerst twee jaar later, in 1700. In 1710 volgde een herdruk van het eerste deel met talloze veranderingen, die volgens Smit de tekst meer kwaad dan goed hebben gedaan. Rotgans' overlijden in dat jaar heeft waarschijnlijk een even grondige beschaving van het tweede deel verhinderd. Bijgevoegd is nu de eerste druk van dat tweede deel uit 1700, waarvan kennelijk nog genoeg exemplaren voorhanden waren. De prenten in het eerste deel zijn gegraveerd door Jacobus Baptist, rond 1700 in Amsterdam werkzaam als boekillustrator, de etsen in het tweede deel zijn vervaardigd door Romeyn de Hooghe, groot bewonderaar van Willem III en decennialang een gedreven propagandist van diens politiek.

Moonen en zijn vriend en uitgever François Halma. De platen in het eerste deel zijn gegraveerd door Jacob Baptist, een graveur die tussen 1693 en 1704 in Amsterdam werkzaam is geweest als boekillustrator; hij is vooral bekend door zijn illustraties voor de Mortier-bijbel. Romeyn de Hooghe, die deel 2 voor zijn rekening nam, stak ook als hij als illustrator optrad zijn doctorstitel in de rechten niet onder stoelen of banken: bij elke plaat staat achter zijn naam J.U.D.
