First Edition, 4to, publisher's colour-lithographed boards, red cloth spine, gilt-patterned & embossed endpapers; pp. [30], printed on thick paper, each page fully illustrated in chromo-lithography, some heightened in gilt. A little shaken, covers slightly rubbed but a very good copy of this rarity. One of the most racially offensive children's books on the Chinese ever published, on the character, appearance, habits and manners of the people and the emperor. A salutary reminder of unequal treaties and treatment.
