Paperback. There is a wealth of homoerotic allusion found in classical Arabic literature from pre-Islamic poems to the Thousand and One Nights. Images and narratives often glorify the male body as beautiful, youthful, or erotic. While such masculine allusion and homoerotic imagery have been recognized as significant elements of classical Arabic literature, they have either been misunderstood or lacked sustained analysis. Exploring the underlying meanings of these motifs, Homoeroticism in Classical Arabic Literature does not so much delineate or identify homosexuality in Arabic literature as offer new, cogent readings of how homoeroticism can be identified by viewing classic Arabic literature through various analytical lenses. A collection of essays by the most influential scholars in the field, this book brings to bear a variety of critical perspectives, ranging from traditional philology to Lacanian analysis, on a literary corpus that includes classical lyric poetry, anecdotal collections, mystical narratives, manuals for dream interpretation, vernacular songs, and shadow plays. These studies investigate both the complexity of attitudes underlying homoerotic allusion and the surprisingly variegated and subtle meanings it can convey.

Bridport is a market town in Dorset, England, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) inland from the English Channel near the confluence of the River Brit and its tributary the Asker. Its origins are Saxon and it has a long history as a rope-making centre. On the coast and within the town's boundary is West Bay, a small fishing harbour also known as Bridport Harbour. Bridport's origins are Saxon. During the reign of King Alfred it became one of the four most important settlements in Dorset - the other three being Dorchester, Shaftesbury and Wareham - with the construction of fortifications and establishment of a mint. Bridport's name probably derives from another location nearby. In the early 10th century the Burghal Hidage recorded the existence of a fortified centre or burh in this area, called 'Brydian', which is generally accepted as referring to Bridport. ' In 1086 the Domesday Book recorded that the town was called 'Brideport'; 'port' is Old English for a market town, thus 'Brideport' may have described the market town belonging to or associated with Bredy. At a later date, in a reversal of a more typical derivation, the town lent its name to the river on which it stood; previously this had been the River Wooth, but it became the River Brit. The contents address: Spark that set Europe in a blaze; The V.A.D.; A call to arms--Energetic Recruiting; The "Howe" Battalion in Training at Bridport; Our Four War Mayors; War Conditions in Bridport; town Guards and Volunteering; Amusing Incidents; Eggs for the Hospitals; Food Control; Coal and Gas Rationing; War Savings In Bridport; Enormous Output of War Material; Loss of H.M.S. "Formidable"; Our Territorial Forces; The Dorset Battery, R.F.A.; 1/4th Battalion Dorset Regiment; 2/4th Battalion Dorset Regiment; Royal Garrison Artillery; Territorial Forces Thanked by the Indian Government; Bridport in touch with Historic Episodes; Welcome Home to Returned Prisoners of War; Bridport's Memorial to the Fallen; and Our Glorious Dead. The Dorset Regiment was a line infantry regiment of the British Army in existence from 1881 to 1958, being the county regiment of Dorset. Until 1951, it was formally called the Dorsetshire Regiment, although usually known as "The Dorsets". It saw service in the Second Boer War along with World War I and World War II. During the First World War, nine hostilities-only battalions were formed, six battalions serving overseas. The 1st Battalion and 6th (Service) battalion served on the Western Front throughout most of the war.[10] Additional battalions (1/4th Battalion, 2/4th Battalion and 3/4th Battalion) were formed as part of the Territorial Force to meet the demand for troops on the Western Front. The 2nd Battalion was in Poona, India, when war broke out and was shipped, as part of the 16th Indian Brigade, to Mesopotamia, where it was trapped in the Siege of Kut and captured by the Turks. (Of the 350 men of the battalion captured, only 70 survived their captivity.) During the siege, returning sick and wounded, and the few replacements who had been sent out, were unable to re-join their battalion, so they, and similar drafts of the 2nd Norfolk Regiment, were amalgamated into a scratch battalion forming part of the force attempting to relieve Kut. The battalion then served in Egypt as part of 9th Indian Brigade in the 3rd Indian Division. The 1/4th Battalion of the Territorial Force served in India and Mesopotamia and 2/4th Battalion in India and Egypt. HMS Formidable was the third British battleship to be sunk - the second to enemy action - in World War One. Of its complement of 780 men, 35 officers (including Captain Noel Loxley) and 512 men were lost. It was lost on New Year's Day 1915.
