Nouvelle Edition. Pagination: xvi, 632, [4]p. Red morocco with the supralibros of Louis XV, rubbed, defaced to both covers at center, floral gilt decorate borders to all edges and spine, corners, edges and spine rubbed and worn, no hinge affect, holding fine, marbled endpapers. Previous owner notes in French to first blank. Few small dog-ear corners and few light dampstains at top edge, else text is mostly clean and crisp. Text in two columns, in French & Latin. It would appear that the arms of Louix XV have been defaced to this binding. Elsewhere these books printed for Louis XV fetch much higher prices, due to the rubbing (defacing) of the binding, we have priced this to go. A chance to own a piece of history for a fraction of the cost. Illustrations: With engraved frontispiece, extra engraved title page, and four engraved-printed titles [Ordinaire De La Messe, Office Du Jeudy Saint, Office du Vendredy Saint, and Office Du Dimanche De Paques, ]. Few illustrated vignettes, and decorative initials. This edition of Semaine Saint is dedicated to King Louis XV of France and the binding bears his coat of arms. Office de la Semaine Sainte is a liturgical text to be used during the Christian celebration of Holy Week (the week before Easter and last part of Lent). Book also includes instructions for personal prayer and reflection.

Leather bound. Condition: Very Good+. First Edition. Tall 4to. Pp. 126 followed by 16 plates of black-and-white plans and photographs of ruins, and two pages of publisher's titles. Marbled endpapers. Bound in full blue pebble-grain morocco, gilt squares on covers, gilt rules on spine, with the gilt House of Savoy crest on the front cover. Binder's stamp C. Glingler Roma. Presentation inscription on the front free-endpaper to the King of Italy, His Majesty Vittorio Emanuele III. Three tiny wormholes on front cover, and slight rubbing to binding, with a bit of loss to lower frame of gilt squares on front and rear covers, and light scuff on spine (see photos). Manuscript inscription reads, A Sua Maesta Vittorio Emanuele III Re d'Italia in occasione della Sua visita alla American Academy in Rome/Roma, li 16 Maggio 1933. The collection includes American scholars' research on large baths at Hadrian's villa, antiquities of the Janiculum, terra sigillata in the Princeton collection, etc. Although in 1929 Mussolini officially removed House of Savoy lions from the Kingdom of Italy coat of arms, replacing them with fasces, here, in 1933 the lions remain fierce and indomitable on the front-cover's gilt-stamped crest. That subtlety may reflect a slight act of subterfuge on the part of the publisher or binder, or simply reliance on an existing binder's stamp.

Contemporary red morocco, covers gilt tooled at top and bottom with 19 mm wide dentelle and at left and right with 13 mm wide dentelle. The area inside the dentelle is gilt tooled with interlacing quadruple filet, and inside the filet are leaves, sprays and flowers en pointelle. The arms of Louis XV (1710-1774) are gilt embossed in the center of the covers, with his chiffre above and below the arms. Raised bands on spines with a small fleur-de-lis in the center of each compartment, surrounded by a circle and flanked by single and double filet in diamond and circular designs. Each compartment is bordered by double filet. Alternating fleur-de-lis are gilt tooled in one row at the top of spine and in two rows at the bottom of spine. Cover edges and turn-ins are gilt tooled, marbled endpapers, gilt page edges. Two frontispiece, one representing the King and Queen in prayer, and a title frontispiece. Five engravings in taille-douce (all without text) by Humblot, one at the beginning of each office. Printed on luxury Holland paper. Some minor rubbing to covers and spine. This volume was published by the Premier Imprimeur Order du Roy et de la Maison, by express command of His Majesty, conforming to the Breviaires and Missels Roman and Parisian, with the ceremonies of the church. Pages ruled in red throughout. Appendix has separate title page with same year of publication and engraved device Royal binding of contemporary gilt-tooled morocco with the gilt monogram of George II, and "Chapel Royal Hampton Court" stamped on front and rear boards, skillfully rebacked in period style with a gilt-lettered brown morocco label. All edges gilt. Some corners lightly worn. Endpapers with offsetting from the leather binding. Front flyleaf has light wear at gutter margin. A very good copy, clean and tight. Second printing of this title with pagination that differs so significantly from the first and third printings that it is possible that the contents are very different as well. The first was published in 1724. OCLC lists one copy of the first printing in North America (Trinity College). OCLC lists six copies of this edition in North America.

Contemporary French brown sprinkled calf with the arms of Cardinal Mazarin (1601-1662) gilt-stamped in centres of sides within gilt line borders and with gilt lilies in corners; gilt edged; neatly rehinged. One of the finest editions of the classics published by the Imprimerie Royale, founded in 1640 by Louis XIII on the advice of Cardinal Richelieu to raise the standards of printing in France. The best paper and types were obtained, and seven presses were installed in the Louvre. French school prize presentation copy to a deserving pupil with manuscript entry on recto of front flyleaf in an early hand : 'Ingenuo adolescenti Stephano Joanni baptistae Duchesne amoris pignus et sapientiae Testimonium D.D. a Theru'. A 19th Century Best-Seller From the Hanoverian Royal Library at Marienberg [ROYAL BINDING]. CUNNINGHAM, J. W. The Velvet Cushion. Seventh edition. London, for T. Cadell and W. Davies, and J. Hatchard, by G. Sidney, 1815. Twelvemo, (187 x 118 mm). Near-contemporary dark green cloth, front cover with the royal arms of Britain and Hanover stamped in blind, back cover with blind central cartouche, spines titled in gilt with large gilt ornaments either side, red sprinkled edges, from the Hanoverian royal library at Marienberg with pencilled shelf-mark on the inside front cover of vol. I. A few scattered spots internally, but still a fine fresh copy, the binding almost as new. This copy's royal Hanoverian binding and provenance elevate an already influential work into a rare survival at the intersection of religion, politics, and monarchy in Regency Britain - an unusually tangible witness to the reach of evangelical literature at the highest levels of society. First published the previous year, The Velvet Cushion - subtitled "An Historical Account of the Divisions within the Church of England since the Reformation" - proved an immediate and sustained success, passing through eleven editions in just three years. Blending fiction with pointed ecclesiastical commentary, Cunningham used the novel form as a vehicle for evangelical critique and instruction, a strategy that ensured wide circulation well beyond clerical readership. John William Cunningham (1780-1861) was one of the leaders of the evangelical movement in the mid-19th century and a strong supporter of the Church Missionary Society. He served as curate to John Venn at Clapham parish church, the epicentre of the famous Clapham sect, and portrays Venn in the book as Berkely. Frances Trollope, who lived in Clapham, took a pot-shot at evangelicalism in general and Velvet Cunningham in particular in her scurrilous novel The Vicar of Wrexhill (1837), earning her a magisterial rebuke from Samuel Wilberforce himself for 'a most abominable personal attack'.
