A lovely hand illumined illustration for Roycroft and Elbert Hubbard on the last page. 75 pp. ABOUT THE PUBLISHER: "Elbert Green Hubbard (1856-1915) was an American writer, publisher, artist, and philosopher. Raised in Hudson, Illinois, he had early success as a traveling salesman for the Larkin Soap Company. Hubbard is known best as the founder of the Roycroft artisan community in East Aurora, New York, an influential exponent of the Arts and Crafts movement. [.] Hubbard described himself as an anarchist and a socialist. He believed in social, economic, domestic, political, mental and spiritual freedom. In "A Message to Garcia and Thirteen Other Things" (1901), Hubbard explained his Credo by writing 'I believe John Ruskin, William Morris, Henry Thoreau, Walt Whitman and Leo Tolstoy to be Prophets of God, and they should rank in mental reach and spiritual insight with Elijah, Hosea, Ezekiel and Isaiah.'" (Wikipedia). Elbert Hubbard and his wife, Alice, died on May 7, 1915 onboard the RMS Lusitania, after it was torpedoed and sunk by the German U-boat U-20. ABOUT THE AUTHOR & THIS WORK: "John Ruskin (1819-1900) was an English writer, philosopher, art historian, art critic and polymath of the Victorian era. He wrote on subjects as varied as geology, architecture, myth, ornithology, literature, education, botany and political economy. [.] During a six-week break at Leamington Spa to undergo Dr Jephson's (1798-1878) celebrated salt-water cure, Ruskin wrote his only work of fiction, the fable "The King of the Golden River", a work of Christian sacrificial morality and charity, it is set in the Alpine landscape Ruskin loved and knew so well. It remains the most translated of all his works. [.] Ruskin's influence reached across the world. Tolstoy described him as "one of the most remarkable men not only of England and of our generation, but of all countries and times" and quoted extensively from him, rendering his ideas into Russian. Proust not only admired Ruskin but helped translate his works into French. Gandhi wrote of the "magic spell" cast on him by Unto This Last and paraphrased the work in Gujarati, calling it Sarvodaya, "The Advancement of All." (Wikipedia).CONDITION: Very good+, rebacked spine and binding shows wear, particularly along the foredge and corners, but is in lovely condition as these limp leather covers are often found in a much more deteriorated state. This copy has been beautifully preserved. Leaves have moderately but evenly toned with only occasional discoloration spots, predominantly within the endpapers. Unmarked except for Hubbard and Hawthorne's signatures. Illuminated illustrations are lovely. A very nice, unique copy. Full refund if not satisfied. Signed by the Publisher and Illuminator.

'My dear Sir, I examined the little picture yesterday with great care. It is good quality, but does not assert itself as by any consummate master; and, on account of its painful subject, I should be distinctly adverse to its being placed in the University galleries:- though I am sure the Trustees would feel grateful for your offer of it. I have instantly ordered it: it will be of the greatest value to me. I am oppressed with accidental work just now - but I should like to send you a paper on that subject ? When would you want it? Add to basketRUSKIN, John; PROUST, Marcel (translator). La Bible d'Amiens. Paris: Mercure de France, 1910. Fifth edition (first issued in 1904). Proust's translation of John Ruskin's The Bible of Amiens. With Proust's preface, consisting of 4 parts: I. "Avant-Propos" (pp 9-14); II. "Ruskin à Notre-Dame d'Amiens" (pp 15-47); III. "John Ruskin" (pp 48-77); IV. "Post-Scriptum" (pp 78-95). With copious footnotes by Proust, ranging from brief citations to substantial commentary. Inscribed and signed by Proust in ink, 'à Monsieur Aubert, souvenir du traducteur, Marcel Proust'. Could this be Georges Aubert, the talented engraver who produced a remarkable woodcut portrait of Proust at 25? At the turn of the 20th century, Ruskin became the object of Proust's close study. During this period Proust translated into French two of Ruskin's books ? The Bible of Amiens and Sesame and Lilies, a remarkable accomplishment considering Proust spoke no English. In a letter to a friend he explained: 'I do not know a word of English and I do not read it well. But after four years of working on The Bible of Amiens I know the whole thing by heart [.] if there are mistakes in my work, they are in the obvious, easy parts, because the obscure parts have been meditated on, recast, thoroughly examined, for years [.] I do not claim to know English. I do claim to know Ruskin.' (The Translation of Memories by P.F. Prestwich, 1999) Proust had two major collaborators during his Ruskin period, both mentioned in his notes to La Bible d'Amiens: Marie Nordlinger (1876-1961), "the eminent English artist", who became the interpreter for Proust of the thought and language of Ruskin; and Robert d'Humières (1868-1915), "the marvellous translator of Kipling". When Proust was stuck on a difficult passage of English, he would consult Robert d'Humières, who would immediately resolve the difficulty "with his astonishing comprehension of English texts, in which intuition plays as great a part as learning". 'Proust, while revealing Ruskin, had revealed Proust unto himself', wrote Nordlinger, and he discovered that 'in order to write the essential book, the only true book, a great writer does not have . to invent it since it already exists in each one of us, but to translate it. The duty and task of a writer are those of the translator.' (Time Regained) pp 347, [7], [4-publisher's catalogue]. 8vo, original printed wrappers. Top corner of the front cover torn and repaired. Light foxing to prelims and fore-edge. Ref.: "Proust and Ruskin" by Marie Nordlinger (Marcel Proust and His Time, 1955); Marcel Proust by Jean-Yves Tadié (2000).
