Im ersten Fünftel kleine Wurmlöchlein (nur wenig Textverlust), im letzten Teil, Blatt VIII zwei Einschnitte im Papier, handschriftliche Notiz von alter Hand auf der Titelseite. Provenienz: Auf vorderem Spiegel aufgezogen ein Brief mit handschriftlicher Besitzvermerk, datiert 1822. Ein weiterer Besitzvermerk auf dem Vorsatz «Franz Gemer 1896». Notizen: Bei Walter Ryffs «Architectur» handelt es sich um eine der frühesten Abhandlungen über Architektur nördlich der Alpen. Seine Texte basieren in erster Linie auf Quellen italienischer Autoren wie Vitruv, Sebastiano Serlio oder Cesare Cesariano, die er dem deutschen Publikum erstmals in Übersetzung zugänglich macht. Im Gegensatz zu seinen italienischen Vorbildern, die sich auf theoretische Ansätze, sprachliche Reinheit und Treue zur klassischen Antike fokussierten, verstand Ryff die Architektur als «mathematische vnd mechanische Kunst». Seine Abhandlung richtete sich daher auch an Baumeister und Ingenieure. Das Werk ist in drei bzw. vier Abschnitte gegliedert: «Perspektive und Geometrie» (Teil I), «Ballistik und Artillerie» (Teil II) sowie «Geometrische Messverfahren» (Teil III). Den Abschluss bildet eine Abhandlung über «Masse und Gewichte». Es präsentiert eine einheitliche Sichtweise auf technisches Wissen und betrachtet das Bauwesen, den Festungsbau und das Vermessungswesen als Teil eines zusammenhängenden intellektuellen Feldes. Die «Architectur» übersetzt die Prinzipien Vitruvs in die Alltagssprache und macht dabei abstrakte Geometrie durch didaktische Illustrationen erlernbar. Durch die Verbindung von textlicher Klarheit und visueller Pädagogik erweiterte Ryff den architektonischen Diskurs, sodass dieser sowohl die Werkstatt als auch das wissenschaftliche Studium umfasste. Sein Buch zeigt, dass das Wissen des 16. Jahrhunderts nicht nur theoretischer oder handwerklicher Natur war, sondern dass beide Bereiche nicht unabhängig voneinander betrachtet werden können.

Das im vorliegenden Exemplar eingebundene faksimilierte Titelblatt ist irrig und gehört zur Erstausgabe (Nürnberg, Petreius 1548), auch das letzte Textblatt ohne Paginierung und Lagennummer gehört nicht zum vorliegenden Exemplar (Kustode am letzten paginierten Textblatt nicht übereinstimmend). Das Blatt war für uns weder der Ausgabe Basel 1575 noch Basel 1614 zuzuordnen. Das Kolophon gibt an "Gedruckt zu Nürnberg durch Johann Petreius Anno M. D. XLVIII.", verso ist die auf den Kopf gestellte Holzschnitttdruckermarke des Basler Buchdruckers Sebastian Henricpetri zu sehen. Gewicht in Gramm: 4000.
