The author draws from astronomy, astrology, philosophy, and theology to form a comprehensive picture of the cosmos as it was seen then. It begins with a description of the Earth, its relationship to the celestial bodies, and the elements that compose it. The author then moves on to discuss the planets and the constellations, paying particular attention to their significance in astrology. The book concludes with a discussion of the hierarchy of angels and their role in the universe. This book offers insights into the scientific and philosophical understanding of the universe during the medieval period, making it a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of science and cosmology. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Seller: Rare Tome, Newberg, OR, U.S.A.
Softcover. Condition: Fair. Misc. (illustrator). A remarkable survivor, clearly a student's copy of Sacrobosco's Libellus de Sphaera, printed in 1558, with the student's inscription at the bottom of the title page, and a question and answer styled study guide bound at the rear (1560, by Hartmann Beyer). The shared shelfmark from the title page to the binding indicates the wallet-style binding may be contemporary to the book. Also, this copy still retaining its broadside with the locations of the sun updated (since the 365.25 days per calendar year causes yearly drift in the location of the sun by day, since the true day is slightly shorter). Sacrobosco's work was first produced around 1230, a text book dedicated to spherical astronomy. Although Sacrobosco did use the Earth as central to all rotation, his methods of finding the locations of stars, the sun and moon based on elliptical patterns was fairly reliable and became the standard of students for centuries to come. He also correctly identified the world as a sphere. By 1558, the idea of the Earth as the center of the universe was largely dispelled, but Sacrobosco's calculations and tables were so good that they were yet to be replaced, so academies were updating to accommodate the new science. This copy has the commentary and editing of several 16th century scholars, Philip Melanchthon and Erasmus Reinhold, as well as a second book with commentary of Hartmann Beyer. The university usage of this copy is clear, and to be noted. The scholar, one Wolfgang, notes at the bottom of the title page that he is studying physics. The 17th century date of study denotes that an older book was still acceptable in studies. Yet, despite the later date, the binding contains both the 1558 Sacrobosco, and (essentially) a 1560 study guide, posing the question, "Has this book been used for study before Wolfgang wrote in it?" A mystery is the Cistercian monastery also holding the work. Did they possess the book before or after Wolfgang? Or, was it from a different Cistercian monastery that was dissolved during the protestant reformation years leading up to Wolfgang's study? Bibliographic Details - 1558 Sacrobosco - Universal Short Title Catalogue (USTC) number 668014, 6 copies recorded in the world's libraries. 1560 Quaestiones. - Universal Short Title Catalogue (USTC) number 689026, 5 copies recorded in the world's libraries and USTC 689025, recording four more copies. Physical Attributes - Measures approx. 15 x 9 x 3 cm. Vellum wallet-style wrapper. Spine with two bands. Spine with author/title in old hand. Matching library number to title page written on front board inner, as well as bookseller notes of date/publication and ex libris of Gingerich. 1st gathering almost loose, chipping to top edge. Title page heavily annotated with two ex libris. One is the library of a Cistercian monastery, and the other is of an early 16th century student. The title page has heavy toning and some chipping along edges. Bottom corner of front of text block dog eared. Throughout text block there is use consistent with student usage. Summary Calendar calculations held a significant place in medieval education. They were used to determine movable feasts like Easter and Pentecost for a given year, calculate the day of the week for specific dates, and determine the moon's age, i.e., how many days had passed since the last new moon. Various tools were employed for these tasks, including key numbers for years, months, and festivals, calculation rules with or without the use of fingers, tables, and mnemonic verses. Given the importance of calendar calculations, it is not surprising that numerous contemporary texts comprehensively covered this subject. The current edition includes 15 texts from the period 1103 to 1232, 14 of which have not been printed before. Only the most successful of these texts, written by Johannes de Sacrobosco, was first printed in 1538 and subsequently in many other editions. The rich content of the texts published here is made accessible through several indexes, including an alphabetical subject index. Large woodcut 'sphaera mundi' to a1 verso, several ½-page woodcut diagrams: 1 of heavenly spheres (a2 verso), 1 of eclipses (c1 verso) and 29 of 'theoricae' (7 in green or yellow original colouring), 6 small woodcut diagrams, large ms diagram of climatic zones inked to a1 blank and copious interlinear ms annotations in an early C16 Germanic hand to first 2 gatherings, decorated initials. Few ll. just toned, fore-edge of a1 trimmed, mainly marginal finger-soiling to first few ll., minor water stain at upper blank gutter of first 4 gatherings, first two ll. strengthened at gutter. A very good, well-margined copy in C19 vellum over paper boards, extremities a bit rubbed. Very good, well-margined and handsomely illustrated copy of the first edition of this important collection on Ptolemaic astronomy intended for students, and the most widely used of the early modern period. Johannes de Sacrobosco (or Holywood, 1195-1256) was a monk and astronomer who taught at Paris. His ground-breaking works were extremely influential in the medieval period; they focused on astronomy and mathematics including the Hindu-Arabic numeral system, a study of the shortcomings of the Julian calendar (anticipating C16 debates) and his treatise 'Sphaera mundi'. First published in 1472, it was reprinted dozens of times in Europe throughout the C15. It discusses the earth in relation to the geocentric Ptolemaic universe, touching on subjects including its physical composition, geometrical realization, its (as it were) sphericity, the revolution of the heavens and the zodiac in relation to sunrise and sunset, the meaning of zenith and climate zones. Johannes Regiomontanus (Müller von Königsberg, 1436-76) studied at Leipzig and Vienna, devoting himself to commentaries on ancient texts on arithmetic and astronomy. He established the first astronomical observatory in Nuremberg. His work argues against the 'deliramenta' of Gherardus Cremonensis's Ptolemaic 'Theorica Planetarum', written in the C12 and the most important manual of astronomy used in Faculties of Arts. Structured as a dialogue between two scholars, it concerns calculations relating to very specific points of the Ptolemaic system, e.g., epicycles and longitude, with the help of geometrical diagrams. The last work'Theoricae novae planetarum'was written by Georgius Purbach (von Peuerbach, 1423-61), an Austrian astronomer and mathematician, acquainted with Regiomontanus. It is a clear introduction to the Ptolemaic universe which discusses the sun and moon, theories of the polar axis and astronomical connections between the moon and the motions of other planets. The early C16 annotator of 'Sphaera mundi' was probably one of the 'novicii adolescentes' (young students) to whom the works were addressed. He applied sundry learning techniques, which shed light on the teaching of astronomy: the typically medieval and early modern interlinear paraphrasis (the rewriting of a concept using synonyms, e.g., 'ascensu' for 'ortu'); marginal glosses (e.g., the astronomical concept of 'annus bisextilis', a clarification of the meaning of 'opposition' for the zodiac); and the clarification of sources (e.g., the specific book in which Euclid discusses the geometrical 'sphaera'). A most interesting copy. First edition edited by Pedro Ciruelo. Paris, Joannis Petit, 1515. En folio. Tipografía gótica a dos tamaños. Texto a dos columnas. 78 ff. [i.e.76]. Valuable folio edition of Sacrobosco's famous Spera with additions and commentaries by Pedro Ciruelo. Sacrobosco discussed the Earth and its place in the Universe. It was required reading by students in all Western European universities for the next four centuries. Very good copy.

It was first used at the University of Paris.and from the middle of the thirteenth century it was taught in all the schools of Europe. In the sixteenth century it gained the attention of mathematicians, including Clavius. As late as the seventeenth century it was used as a basic astronomy text" (DSB XII, p. 61). BMC V, p. 438. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 8vo (159 x 105mm). [16], 207pp, [15] (of [17]) pages; lacks the final blank. Signatures: *(8), a-n(8), A(8). Woodcut printer's device of fleur-de lis. Dedicated Thomas Gadagne of Lyon. With commentary by Élie Vinet (1509-1587), humanist of Bordeaux, and Giovanni Pierio Valeriano Bolzani. Numerous in-text woodcut illustrations and astronomical diagrams; but lacking the volvelles. Contemporary limp vellum; (recased, endpapers renewed; slight marginal dampstaining and occasional browning). Early 17th-century ownership inscriptions and names to title in Latin, "Canonici" could refer to "Canon" teachings and suggests a student association. The date "1642" is written on the bottom fore-edge and "1781" on the top fore-edge of the book, perhaps giving a range to this association. Sacrobosco's Sphaera was widely copied in manuscript form and was also one the first scientific works to be published in 1472. It was particularly valued for its textbook knowledge. The Sphaera underwent more than 200 successive editions, up to the 17th century. Sacrobosco's popular, illustrated astronomical tract, the 'Sphaera' with commentary by Vinet, a textbook favorite for early humanists. This Giunta edition, augmented by mathematician Élie Vinet, was designed as a textbook for students competent in mathematics and geometry; but Vinet also combined his philological notes with parallel passages from ancient poets and elementary manuals. Interestingly, it is known that parts of Sacrobosco's text survive in student notes contemporary to this period. Vinet's translations into Latin and the vernacular as well as his short commentary all show the use of the Sphaera at an elementary level. This humanist approach to Sacrobosco was much resisted at first but importantly Vinet's contributions paved the way for other commentators, most famously Christoph Clavius, to also make their additions. Seven copies are located at in US institutions and nine copies are located at European institutions, rather rarely found. Baudrier VI, p. 322-323; Houzeau and Lancaster 1657.
