This book challenges the notion that slavery is a necessary evil for the maintenance of the sugar and coffee plantations of the Caribbean, arguing instead that the abolition of slavery and the slave trade would be beneficial to both the colonies and France itself. The author counters arguments against abolition, including the perceived economic costs and the assumed negative effects on the well-being of enslaved people, with meticulous research and logic. This book provides a comprehensive historical overview of the arguments for and against the abolition of slavery in the 18th century, revealing insights that are still relevant to current discussions on racial and economic justice. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

XV, 687 pp., 4 pl. h. t. ; 282 pp. dont l'index, qqs. traces d'adhésif sur la page de garde et le dern. feuillet du tome I 2 vol. in-8 - br. et perc., couv. cons. (tome II). Tomes II et III des Origines du Jansénisme.
12mo (161 x 99 mm). [1], 56 (recte 65) ff. Woodcut title vignette (harvesting scene with lion at top), woodcut headpiece and initial. Publisher's binding? of 18th-century French olive morocco, triple gilt fillet on sides, flat spine gold-tooled and -lettered, gilt edges (joints and extremities scuffed, spine a trifle faded).*** Counterfeit edition of a meditation on suicide by one of the founders of Jansenism. Reputedly inspired by musings of Henri IV, reported to the author by a friend at court, this work is an apology for the morality of suicide under special circumstances, namely to save the life of one's sovereign. Du Vergier's arguments include over 30 examples of justifiable suicide. Considered by most a youthful jeu d'esprit, for the Jesuits the essay was pure casuistry and a "horror." This counterfeit edition, deliberately intended to deceive, repeats the foliation errors of the original edition and contains the Privilege du Roy; but it is embellished with a title woodcut which distinguishes it easily from the first edition (which instead bears Du Bray's device, a hand holding a sheaf of grain), and is printed on mid-eighteenth-century Limousin paper (carr? raisin fin). The counterfeit may have been published by the Jesuits as ammunition against Duvergier de Hauranne (cf. F. Martin, Ang?lique Arnauld abbess of Port Royal, 1873, pp. 185-6). Of the dozen N. American libraries holding this title, all except Houghton (which holds a copy of the true first edition) take the imprint at its face value. The binding may be a "publisher's binding" (the publisher being of course anonymous): I have seen another privately owned copy of the book in a nearly identical binding. Barbier III, 1155; Brunet IV, 1014; Arbour, Un ?diteur d'oeuvres litt?raires au XVIIe si?cle: Toussaint Du Bray (Geneva, 1992), pp. 37, 195 (not mentioning the counterfeit, conflating it with the first edition).

Add to basketFirst editions of two important contributions to actuarial science. Saint-Cyran was a French creole from Martinique and a captain in the Corps de Gènie. The publication established him as a leading authority on life insurance. His work draws attention to the regularity of mortality statistics, and though any individual case may be irregular, there is a broad pattern in any large sample which will show patterns which can be applied to any other similar sample. The book contains various annuity tables computed from Willem Kersseboom's mortality tables. Duvillard (1755-1832) was head of the statistical department of population in the office of the French Ministry of the Interior: "an important civil servant. the man who introduced systematic life insurance to France" (p. 41). In his treatise he considers the theory of loans and mortgages backed by fixed or varied annuities.
