Set over the course of a single day in Communist Warsaw, the nov…el follows a disillusioned writer who is persuaded by dissidents to commit an act of political self-immolation in protest against the Soviet-backed regime. Equal parts political allegory, philosophical meditation, and absurdist satire, the work has frequently drawn comparisons to Orwell, Kafka, and Milan Kundera. Richard Lourie's acclaimed English translation includes an insightful translator's introduction placing the novel within the political and literary climate of late-Communist Poland. This is the First American Edition, First Printing, published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 1983, with no later printing statement present on the copyright page. The hardcover remains in Near Fine condition, with clean blue paper-covered boards over a black cloth spine, bright silver spine lettering, a tight square binding, and clean, unmarked interior pages. A small, unobtrusive spot is present on the rear board, and scant light pencil underlines are present, affecting neither text nor readability. The dust jacket is in Very Good condition, retaining the original price on the front flap. It shows several small chips and short closed tears concentrated at the spine ends and upper corners, together with light edge wear and mild age toning, but remains complete, attractive, and presents well. Tadeusz Konwicki (1926-2015) was one of Poland's most influential novelists, screenwriters, and film directors. A veteran of the Polish resistance during World War II, he became one of the country's leading literary voices, using allegory, irony, and surrealism to critique Communist rule while exploring themes of memory, identity, and moral responsibility. His novels - including A Dreambook for Our Time, The Polish Complex, and A Minor Apocalypse - were widely circulated in underground editions and translated internationally, establishing him as a major figure in twentieth-century European literature.
